Any of you deal with upgrading their phone while using AT&T with an older unlimited plan? After the iPad AT&T ditched unlimited data plans going with the "nearly unlimited" 2gb and up plans that leave much to be desired as per "nearly unlimited" goes. I have a Treo 680 and am salivating over the Samsung Captivate but would prefer to go to LetsTalk.com for a sweet $25 deal after coupon for it. Problem is I'm a secondary line on my dad's account (being an AT&T employee he can pass on his discount) and I'm the only one with an unlimited data plan set in the stone age that is EDGE. AT&T said I could upgrade with them and from 2G to 3G and keep the grandfathered plan but that would be to the tune of $200. EDIT: After doing a bit of digging I noticed I was logged into the AT&T Premier site rather than the vanilla model. Apparently that $200 price tag is for a Captivate sans contract. Seems like I can swap my sim card over and figure out how to move from 2G to 3G.
I work for at&t so I'll do my best. Since you already have the Data Unlimited from your Treo 680 you can keep that feature on your plan. 2G to 3G doesn't matter. But make sure the sim in the captivate is 3G-capable, it will say 3G on it. Just never get rid of the Data Unlimited. Once you do you'll never get it back, unless at&t decides to offer it later on. Also the captivate is USD$199.99 with the 2-year contract/upgrade. The captivate is USD$499.99 without contract. Hope this helps
FWIW, one of my co-workers just upgraded his original iPhone (on 2G unlimited data) to a used iPhone 3GS. He got a call the same day and was told that he would now have to pay $10 more per month for unlimited "3G" service. Funny thing is he used the exact same sim, and plan, with a cheap eBay 3G aircard for years without any surcharge for 3G data.
