http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/tec...smartphone-data-usage-with-new-pay-plans.html AT&T announced a new set of wireless data plans that would require users to pay extra money if they exceeded monthly limits set on the amount of data they sent and received through their phones. On its line of smartphones -- including Apple Inc.'s iPhone, for which AT&T is the sole carrier -- the telecom has for years offered so-called "all you can eat" plans that allowed users to send and receive an unlimited amount of data -- including e-mails, web pages, music and video. The new plans would be a substantial move away from that model. Instead of paying $30 per month for unlimited data usage, new AT&T smartphone users could opt to pay $25 dollars a month for 2 gigabytes of data. If users exceeded that allotment, they would pay $10 for every additional gigabyte.
So.... instead of updatiing their telecom to support the higher bandwith the iPhone and their smart phones require, they do an ass-backwards way in dealing with their shitty service. Thank god I'm with Verizon. ZERO dropped calls. Never again will I go with AT&T and their shitty GSM.
Jailbreak, switch to t-mobile for new users. Old users will be allowed to keep their contracts. Ipad? Jailbreak, move to t-mobile unlimited.
I heard on NPR today that Verizon is considering the same thing. Also, they mentioned that statistics show that only 2% of iPhone customers actually use more than 2gigs of bandwidth a month.
If only 2% of customers used over 2 GB then why bother changing the plan. Bull Shit if you ask me. Also aren't AT&T always trying to screw over customers? The only time I hear about the company is when they are screwing over people.
Be assured the rest are just waiting to guage the backlash to AT&T. If AT&T gets off easy the rest will take the hit and jump on the bandwagon as well.
So that when they go over the limit they can nail them. Family emergency Vacation New Girfriend Overages $550 It's far better to set the bar low,so when 5-7% of the users in any given month (will) go over, you make more money.
If this will get people to do more important things while in bars or clubs like get fucked up and/or pull someone, then I'm all for it. I miss the days when half the place was geeked out up against the wall. I go to a nightclub now and half the place is looking down on their fucking phone. NTT is still the most evil telecom company. They deserve to lose every yen they have.
I knew they would blow it eventually, in my opinion apple should be looking to have their phones carried by verizon or tmobile if they want to keep outdoing the android. I have tmobile myself and am quite satisfied with it, so how much crippled is the iphone when you jailbreak it to work on tmobiles network? Also does anyone have the feeling apple is starting to go downhill the way sony did?
It's not crippled at all. I've ben using an iPhone on Tmo for about 2 years now and it works just fine.
Zero. In fact, it's more usable. You can run signed & unsigned applications. The only issue I've had is when I leave Japan's roaming area and come back my phone doesn't ever realize where it is, and I have to restore. It's a coin toss, but totally worth it. I save hundreds every trip to the states by avoiding those fucking ripoff international roaming fees.
If you jail brake an iphone, is it possible to take another phone plan which has unlimited data usage (Since they know on a regular mobile you could never rack up that kind of downloading) and use it on the iPhone with tethering to your computer?
I was going to ask the same question, if there isn't a problem what is there to fix? I suppose it could be for when/if they enable tethering, which you already have to pay extra for on AT&T, and get no additional data transfer.
Because that 2% are the ones running Linux mirrors off their phones or whatever absurd wastes of bandwidth they're doing. I've never understood why people always flip out when a company switches from unlimited to metered service. If you charge all customers the same fee for unlimited, you're just averaging your total bandwidth cost over your total customer base. And given that the distribution of bandwidth usage is dominated by a small fraction of users at the far upper end, the "unlimited" fee is essentially a way for the low-usage customers to subsidize that one guy running 2000TB a month of data through his phone - which, unless you're that guy, seems like a raw deal.
I use my iPhone on Tmo with T-zones. Although it's only Edge data speeds I have been able to use unlimited data for about 2 years now at only $6 a month. Suck that ATT!
New article: http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/mobile/06/04/att.data.consumer/index.html?hpt=Sbin It says that more than half iPhone users use less than 200 MB per month, so for most people they're actually going to save money if they want to opt into the cheaper plan. Looks like you're right....
Japan's plan, while more expensive for some, is smarter. Data is a flat 1,000 yen per month, and you pay in increments, with a cap of roughly 4800 yen.
AT&T 2G is fine, it is the 3G that is the issue. The problem is tethering. That will kill the network. However, if you want tethering on the iPhone AT&T force you to sign to the new plan lol.
