hi, i got an old atari 2600 jr. clone with about 100 games bundled inside that a friend gave to me. It's not working fine, the console starts and the games seems to start, some noise seems to appear in the screen (colors like the atari games) but it looks weird, like if the video tracing don't work properly. Sound also works good, it got a small button in the back to change games, it works good too. Anyone got a tip/repaired a console with this kind of issue? PD: my friend says that he got this problem when used a variable power supply that was set to 12v. I don't know if it can be the origin of the fault, because inside of the console there's a 7805 regulator that (as far as i know) can work even with 30v.
You really need to give us more information. For example: What is the clone called? What video connectors does it have? What video connector are you using? What type of television are you using (CRT? LCD?)? Are you using the original PSU? Never mind the voltage, is the PSU the correct polarity, giving AT LEAST the correct current and (assuming the PSU is DC), was the original PSU DC? Original Ataris had poor RF cables. You might want to try a known good RF cable if you're using that.
- I don't know the name of this clone, it has no inscriptions on it, but it has the same shape than an original 2600 jr. Maybe it was made by Dynacom, since they've distributed Atari clones here in Argentina. - It has just one rf connector - We were using that rf connector with a handmade coax cable - it was tested in a 32" lcd tv and in an old sony trinitron crt tv, in both we get the same result. - No, it was not the original psu, it was just a multi-voltage power supply I dont think that this is because a bad rf cable, the image looks sharp and clear, but it's distorted in a way that looks that the tracing is wrong. I've read that when the internal rf unit is wrong, you can see some "rain" in the image...well that's not happening here. I think that this can be a Bad TIA or just some Bad Caps, and the PSU incident was just a coincidence, because this machine was stored for about 5-6 years without being started. Thanks for your answer!
The scrolling looks like a sync issue, the rest... faulty hardware. Replace the PSU and hope for the best.
i've asked in some atari-fan-forum, they told me that maybe the RIOT chip is involved, but nothing more specific. I will open it and start testing caps, let's see if i can fix it, i want to play river raid again!
