Atari Jaguar PCB connector

So on the back of the jag is an open area with a strong resemblance to the open end of a game cart. from what i understand these are the audio and video outs.

this sounds and looks like an easy afternoon project to make your own cables, however, i dont want to solder onto my jag. i tried looking but maybe didnt use the correct terminology.
could i buy a connector that plugs right into the back of the jag, or could easyly be modified? it seems like it might be something an electronics supply site might carry.
on ebay right now people are selling the s-video adapter cable for $30+. i cant immagine this would take more than $4 to make though. so yeah, does anyone know what type, size, kind of connector i would need to buy?

ok. a little more googling shows that i need a card edge connector. however i only count 24 pins on the jag and it seems 26 pin is the standard. also. is there specific sizes od card edge connectors? what would i need for this?

 

There's no "standard" edge connector, no. They come in all shapes, pitches and numbers of pins. It's standard 0.1" pitch. You'll find the edge connector alone easily swallows your $4 budget.

IIRC, Digikey has a minimum purchase amount requirement (something like $20 or $25 miniumum purchase).

 

Found another place that sells them for $1.50 plud $6 shipping. so i might just buy 10 of them and make cables to sell on ebay. not sure.

well, doing a little more research, the 24 pin card edge connector is the same one that is used in the 2600 cart slot. however im not having any better luck finding that peice any cheaper. the best deal i have found so far was 10 for $20. i wonder if there is even a market for these if i were to make 9 extras.

Im thinking i might make something similar to the CATBOX only way way more simple. just have Audio, Composite, and S-Vid on it. maybe just install the 24 pin adapter the a project box and wire up rcs plugs and s-video. Might not be too hard. fun project though.

If you can find an old PC floppy cable lying around, you might be able to cut up the card-edge connector on it -- specifically, I'm talking about the part that this website calls the 5.25-inch "A"/"B" connector:



It's the correct pitch (0.1") and hopefully the right thickness, but it's 34 (2 x 17) pins so you'd need to cut it to fit. This way, you could even just solder to the wires coming out of the connector, and you might already have one of these cables lying around for free.

(They also make decent SD card slots!)

i found 26 pin card edge connectors today at a local shop. i bought 20 of them in hopes that i can modify them to work. i also purchased almost everything i would need to build my first mockup. the only part i had trouble finding was a solder in female s-video plug. so im going to build a composite one first and see how that goes.


ok. i know you guys are laughing but keep in mind this is a mockup. and it freaking works awesomely.
i cut a small peice of plastic and wedged it into pin 25 and 26 and put a small piece of tape over it. it looks a little janky if you ask me but it is the best i could do right now. i will make another only this time get the rca jacks centered and more uniform.


k. made another cable. this time s-video. it works great. At this point i'm going to have to say, "To hell with composite" because the difference between composite and s-video is night and day on this system. Although composite is better than RF, its an even greater leap forward going to S-Video. so im going to go ahead and order the correct 24 pin card edge connectors as well as some s-video-F solder in connectors. maybe.

 

Was the DSP connector next to the AV one for the planned modem?

 

I believe so, it did also have other uses as well.. like i think the released link cable used it as well.

 

Yeah. The link dongle did come out (I believe) you needed 2 jags, 2 copies of the same game, 2 link dongles, and 2 tv's. Sounds pretty dumb if you ask me. anyway. ordering parts (Now that i have confidence) and am going to produce about 10 3' s-video cables.

 

Thats the norm for virtually any console that doesn't have single screen multiplayer though? The only notable exception being the Nintendo DS where you could send some portion of the game over WiFi to have multiplayer on a friend's DS without needing multiple carts.

A 5'1/4 floppy connector fit very well. I use one for making a RGB cable.

 

I got my cable from Bomberhead today, works great, and is a beefy frickin' cable so it should last a nice long time! Time to get my ass kicked by the bright colours and slippery controls of Zool 2 in S-video.
