Rather than start going on about this in the Police Academy thread, I thought I'd start a new one. Do you happen to have a scan of this brouchure? Anyone know how far along this conversion was? Any further info on this would be cool. Cheers
if i remember correctly, an old NG stated that Sega was buying stock in Atari, and that sega and atari were going to cross platform develop titles. This was around 1994, it could have been possible as sega had stated that they were wanting to put titles on other systems aswell(that was also stated in that mag if i remember correctly) Ryan
Something I probably did not make 100% clear: It was picture of the GameGear Sonic game on a Lynx. Just a picture, no game was made at all. http://www.atariage.com/catalog_page.html?CatalogID=72¤tPage=3
that image just does'nt look right, the rest of the catolog looks okay, but the sonic image does'nt look right, can't put my name on it, just does'nt seem right Maybe Atari was just trying to have a good laugh Ryan
No, I think there WAS in fact Atari-Sega cooperation planned during that era... I have heard rumours of announcements (yeah, not just rumours, but rumours of rumours...) that Sega was going to release Virtua Fighter on the Jaguar, and likewise Atari released Tempest 2000 for the Saturn among others.
That, or somebody at the press made a nice mistake. Anyway, you are right id does not look right. That's because that is a screenshot of the Game Gear Sonic game runing on actual Game Gear hardware, and the Game Gear has a more blurry yet higher resolution screen with more colors than the Lynx.
It looks like a doctored picture to me, either by the people that made the catalogue or the person that scanned it.
the actually image does look fairly close to the others, its blured as hell, and you can see vertical rows in it...its the edges of the picture that look weird...there too hard..they dont blend in with the screen.....they should have made like more of a transistion.....like they should be softer... well that was confusing Ryan
Doctored, I promise you. Nothing ever came of the "deal" between Sega and Atari. Not a damned thing unfortunately. No protos, no nothing except vapor and a bit of money thrown about.
There was a settlement due to some litigation that came about IIRC, but as I said, nothing ever came of it. Not a single Atari document has ever been found (and there have been quite a few found since the old Atari went under) to prove anything was ever done with any Sega property on the Lynx or Jaguar. Not a single proto, document, or anything. I'd love it if there was, because I'd have some more hunting to do. Jaysmith2000 and Curt Vendel at the Atari Historical Society (http://www.atarimuseum.com) could probably confirm this, since they own a crapload of documents from the old Atari. The last games I know of for the Lynx that were in production were Ultra Vortex (rights now owned by Carl Forhan for later release), and Alien vs. Predator. I do own an original prototype of Alien vs. Predator for the Lynx, and the only known version with all three characters (inc. the Alien) playable, unlike the oft passed-around ROM and reproduction versions floating around. What really intrigues me, though, is that the ROM of AvP floating around has a date of 1993, but seems more complete, while mine doesn't necessarily seem as complete (but has the Alien), and has a date near the END of 1993.
Here you go... screens (blurry since I haven't had it dumped to take pics in Handy with): http://www.op9.net/vg/index.php/full_collection/Prototype_Screenshots/Atari_Lynx/Alien_vs._Predator Just click on each image to see a mid-sized version, then click it again to see the full-sized version, which is by far the clearest. The Lynx screen is by no means optimal for screenshots. Enjoy. You can get a ROM image for the other version of AvP legally at Atari Age, in their Lynx ROM archive. It's of the version that everyone's pretty much got.
