Atari Lynx will not turn on after disassembly

Hey guys. I just got a Lynx II at a garage sale and after putting new batteries in it, I found it worked fine except the buttons were sticking. I completely disassembled everything to clean and now after putting it back together it will not power on at all. I triple checked all of the ribbon cables and yes the batteries are seated the right way. No caps appear to be blown and all of the traces on the button membrane are clean and intact. What do you think could be causing this?

 

have you checked for dry joints?

Do be careful installing this, particularly if you're not the seasoned soldering type.

Very tricky to install in my opinion. Hate mosfets wrecked an Inverter board in a LCD TV once trying to replace one. $7 for something so small though... ouch!

 

Yes they are, very easy to lift a trace or destroy a via. I've been known to do it on occasion and I'm one of those nutbags who has no problem reworking SMT/SMD components.

Im okay with surface mount stuff. Avoid working with them when I can. A nightmare situation is surface mount and computer motherboards. They were always a pain in the ass.

 

Ive successfully replaced components before. The key to minimizing damage in my opinion is to cut the broken one off and then desolder the legs. use plenty of desoldering braid and make sure everything is nice and clean when the new one goes in. Just my personal experience.

 

It's a piece of piss. Get some skills.

If anyone wants one of these done, let me know. I've actually got several Lynxes on my workbench at the moment.

Incidentally, buying a Lynx that doesn't fire up is risky - you'll actually find that the switch (it's a switch, NOT a resistor or a MOSFET transistor) is OK and it's terminal.

 

I just got one of these with the same problem, and it fired up with the headphone to negative bridge. Does anyone have any pictures of the damn thing?

 

Replace the Q12 switch. You won't find the original, so you'll have to check equivalents books for an alternative.

I can do it in the UK, although I'm out of the switches and I'm not sure offhand what price I can get them for now.

If it fires up but there's no picture, forget it - it's toasted.
