I was looking for 9 pin cable to use as extension. When I was looking around, I notice a slight oddity in price. A controller extension cable is usually $7 to $10 while serial cable can be as little as $2. Similar length, cable with huge plug and "ears" costs more than plug that are skinny and has no ear or any thumb screw hole. Unfortunately serial extension cable and similar cable with the ears rarely fits in game consoles.

Why is plug with more plastic and metal cheaper? And do any of you know where is the cheapest source of Atari or Genesis extension cable? Or where I can get molded female plug that will fit in game consoles.

Demand and quantity. There were just far more serial cables made and so they can be made for a much cheaper price.

If you don't want to pay $7 for an extension, then I would just get the $2 cable and use the wires to splice and extend the controller yourself.

The problem with serial cable is the female end is too large to fit in some consoles. That's why I wanted to find cable that don't have Dumbo's ears on the sides.
