Hi all. If anyone is free on Friday nights (6-12 PM) and looking to play some Cave games 'till your heart explodes, then you should PM me. It's one thing to play these games, but when I have no one to talk about them with, someone who loves them as much as I do, I start to feel dead. /emo I don't have any PCBs or superguns, but I gotta PS2 with Monster cables and a CRT TV! I'll even supply food and drink. Peace.
Guys please grow up. If anything, it should be me concerned about who comes into my house and can be trusted. I am well aware of the risks involved here, and will not agree to set up anything unless I talk to the invitee on the phone, to make sure that they were chill. (Let alone give them my fucking contact information beforehand! I mean, durr!) After all, this is an awesome community blog for gamers; and this being the internet and all, I find it convenient for my exhausting schedule to make friends here. If I can't, I can't.
Thanks for the suggestion, GaijinPunch. While the idea sounds really appealing, I doubt they would be very inviting. A few months back, I trolled the fuck out of that place. If websites had physical shapes, shmups.com would be a posh university drenched in gasoline and set ablaze; that bad. Of course I feel horrible about it now, (I can't believe my account is still active...) but I have the feeling that they'll tell me to stick my thumb up my ass and take a hike, regardless. On a more positive note, I've started meeting with a bunch of college buddies-- every friday from now onward-- to play PS2 arcade ports in the school's cafeteria. It felt so great to have people admire my leet skills, that I've decided to play in public more often. Knowing that people are captivated at the screen, hearing them say "this guy knows this game inside and out" it's like, I don't want to let them down... or something gay like that. Oh, but there is SO much more butt raping yet to occur....don't you go anywhere.
Aight, well... fair enough. The good to some, bad to others thing about shmups is that the average age is a bit older, and everyone is far more into nitpicking the pros and cons of the hobby. I'll admit: interlacing low res fucks me off to no end, it will keep me from buying a product, and I will bitch about it. It also suffers from something similar to here: the users "roll" for lack of a better word. New people come in, and we do the same series of dumb ass posts over and over. You don't get that as much here, but there are far more annoying regular users here. Now while everyone on the high horse might annoy you, after a couple of key people were banned a year or so back, the place has chilled. There's a 5+ page topic on National Health Care in Off Topic over there that has not a single flame in it. The possibilities of that here is the same as traveling through a worm hole with current technologies. In fact, no politics anywhere other than the one thread, right? I'm not saying I want to talk politics, but it speaks volumes about the average level of maturity in the two places. Case in point, the replies to your post.
The problem with shmups forum is you get a few ill informed jerks - I made a post there asking about about western sites to legally purchase and download Japanese doujins and someone (can't remember their name) says something (with a lot of bad attitude) immediately about there being no paid for doujins, only free ones. Obviously anyone that has any knowledge about the subject knows there are probably more paid for doujins than there are free ones. I replied to him in the thread stating such, obviously got no reply back. I also got several very helpful replies, I remember a user called Observer (i think) gave me a hugely helpful reply that was a good few hundred words. Many of the longer term posters there seem to be of a similar nature. There are also people whose humor is perhaps quite dry, probably influenced by the 'rollers' as GaijinPunch mentions. I guess new members may not 'get' it or know that is just how the poster is, rather thinking said poster has ill intentions. No doubt bellends like those over at Insomnia.ac like Icycalm etc have jaded long term posters there. A lot of people there seem to have a habit of simply quoting someone to get their point across. Though each to their own obviously I personally only post when I've got something to say/ask (most of the time at least!), don't see the point in simply communicating your position on something, without adding anything to the discussion. Also though I play shooters 70% of the time, seeing as I'm more of a 'survival' player jumping between lots of games rather than nailing just one, and that I don't have access to a 360/new arcade boards, I find a lot of discussion passing me by as much focuses on scoring and hardware, rather than discussion on some crappy old PC Engine, PC-98 or X68000 shooter. My 2 cents as to why I don't have a perfect main forum
Basically it comes down to me being immature for no other reason but to get a heated argument started. Like I said, I am not happy with myself for doing that. I don't want to get into detail, because 1. Its all behind me now. 2. It sucks to think about it. We have all acted irrationally on the internet, at one time or another, and for whatever reason. Like 73% (maybe even more) of videogame forum posters on the internet do not have a personality-- something that regulars can look at and say "Oh, that's the same old Bill; constantly cracking jokes about poop."-- but see the internet as some kind of psychological playground where anything goes. A perverse lucid dream. So, since you can't really pickpocket, shoplift, kill or rape online, they get their kicks from being assholes to complete strangers. Which is where the "internet should not be taken seriously" comes into play, I think. I mean, just look at Gamefaqs; everyone sounds, by and large, like the same poster-- because they can't spell very well, and their posts have far less insight than many of the users here. (Who do have memorable personalities!) When I said "posh university", I was alluding to the seriousness of my flame's insulting tone in somewhat of a comical, sadistic way; not exactly because anyone was on their high horse. But I think I know what you mean. And oli_lar, I get the same impression from that place. Even though they are sometimes unhelpful and rude, you gotta give them credit for all of those great comprehensive lists/ guides. (DOJ strategy, Galuda score analysis, Multi-directional shooters.) But I gotta disagree with what you said about Insomnia. The issues they discuss may call for harshness, because the newbs who sign up can muddle them; and mostly because they fail to understand them. I have been banned from there for that reason. They are not "jaded", they are actually hillarious. icy's write-up titled, *"Cocksucking Videogameland" had me in tears from the middle to the end. I laughed so hard I could not breathe. They strike me as some of the happiest people on the internet. *http://insomnia.ac/commentary/cocksucking_videogameland/
