Hey all, Usually I'm a huge lurker, but this site will see some participation from me! I actually found this site while googling for Dreamcast parts. Then I saw people prototyping HDMI boards for ancient consoles and THEN I saw all the other awesome subforms here! I've been voiding warranties and dabbling with development for a long time now, but somehow have never encountered this community before. You guys seem to be really active with regards to the retro mods! it's great! So that's one less reason to be a lurker... people are actually here
Welcome to the forums. These guys are awesome when it comes to modding electronics. What sort of work have u done so far?
I've found that the modding portion of this site's users has grown a lot in the past few months, so we're glad to have another! I'm not really into modding so much, but I have dabbled in a few projects and am currently working on a micro Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition machine using a Raspberry Pi 2, as well as a 3-in-1 N64, SNES/Super Famicom, and Famicom/NES system.
Hey guys, thanks! Didn't expect replies to this haha Taijigamer2, I haven't done anything groundbreaking or awesome like people here, sadly. The mods on this site are tempting me to break out the soldering iron and having another go at it, though! (I've been out of practice for a while). My skills are average, but at least I'm not as shonky as this eBay modder: http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/fucked-up-n64-mod-off-from-ebay.56582/ Anyway, in the past I've done simple stuff like fixing consoles for friends (xbox, 360, wii), putting LEDs, fans and whatnot in places they ought not be, or just following guides to do stuff like dump and flash 360 drives and nands. When the 360 JTAG stuff was breaking I had fun cutting up an LPT1 printer cable and dumping the nand on a junk 360 that I had. Then i found a list of components to build a USB flasher, which also involved flashing a microchip (using, I think, that same LPT1 cable!) that was fun in itself, while greatly speeding up the 360 flashing process. I bought a brand new Jasper console and took a soldering iron to it immediately. I kinda quit before the glitch hacks showed up, tho. DeChief, I've been looking for a reason to play around with the Pi I have played with Arduino's, but never had the inspiration for my own project. I hear that the Pi is perfect for MAME and emulation, so I may head down that path some day. I don't have the funds or space at the moment, but I'd like to build a virtual pinball machine. Maybe I could do a smaller one using a Pi. I've seen other people make full-size ones using actual pinball cabinets and a widescreen tv as the tabletop. Pretty cool! I'm out of touch enough to still consider the Arduino as the go-to solution for custom board stuff, but I'm seeing now that getting custom, single-purpose boards made up and distributed in a group-buy is the future! I will get in on that action hehe HEX1GON, hey! thanks!
Like yourself I started messing with jtag and firmware flashing on the 360 then moved on to rgh when jtag was patched. I started with usb pic flashers tho so didn't have to wait 30 mins per dump! It's definately an evolving hobby. I started soft modding and hack fixing xboxs, now I've got custom pcb's and homemade circuit board comms hardware. I'm currently working on a multi box mod which includes a 360, PS3, wii and DC all in one case. These sorts of projects really accelerate your skills. If u want any tips on building custom pcbs etc just pm me. Good luck with your mods.
