How on earth does the Auto Tag System on WinAmp actually work? It's amazing! Today I copied a load of tracks from MD to MP3 via my stereo and PC. I then set about tagging them when I noticed the Auto Tag option in WinAmp. Thinking that it couldn't possibly work with a file I had just made I pressed it to see what would happen. Sure enough it fully tagged the file with correct artist, song title, album, track number and record label! I tried it on 6 files that I made and each one was perfect apart from the album names but that's probably because that track had appeared on more than one album. Anyway, how the hell does it know? Does it read the actual music data against a data base? What if the recording was complete turd, would it still work.? however it works I think it's amazing. Yakumo
I've never come across WinAmp's auto-tagging, but I have come across it in other places. I'm assuming it uses something called "acoustic fingerprinting" (probably using something like Music Brainz) - which sounds self-explanatory enough. I can't claim to know much more about it than that, I'm afraid.
It works by reading the disc's TOC/gap/subcode information and comparing it against CDDB (this what you mean Barc0de?), freedb or another database. I don't think acoustic (or optical) fingerprinting is here yet for media recognition at least for the masses, but what a convenience it will be when we can hum a song and a computer can find it...
Could you please tell me where you find this "Auto-Tagging" System in Winamp? :crying: Never heard of this feature. I downloaded Music Brainz a long time ago, but I really dont like it.
Yeah, I thought of this a while ago. There's a few tracks that I will *NEVER* find, but I could definitely play a progression or two from them on the piano. Oh, one day I'll have a clear copy of some tracks I only had taped off some off-beat college radio program.
If he was ripping the tracks from a CD, I'd have said CDDB too. But he said he copied them from his MiniDisk player through his stereo, which -- as far as I know -- rules that out.
Doesn't minidisc store some sort of sequence relating to the original material though? a sort of header?
It is not CDDB for sure because these were copied from MDs via analogue to a PC. CDDB needs to be copied digitally if it's going to appear on the copy. After copying the track to my PC I edited out the silent zones between tracks. All tracks came from many different sources. One track was taken from the Saturn game Macross. The song in question is the track Minmay sings during a battle. Winamp knew what this was! There is no way CDDB is used. To find the auto tag system in Winamp download version 5.531 that was released in April this year. The auto Tag system is found in the "View File Info" section. Here's a picture of it and the info if found for the track I recorded from a Sega Saturn game to Mini Disc many years ago then to my PC last night. All the data is correct. I checked on line to see if the track in question was by that artist Winamp said it was by and if it appeared on the album listed. 100% correct. Amazing! Yakumo
Yakumo this is what autotagging does, Autotagging uses Gracenote to analyze a track's waveform and then fixes the id3 tags/metadata with the correct info
Hey thanks for the pic Yakumo. Made finding it 1,000 Times easier! They should put it in an easier location though, like "File/Autotag", but whatever. And just to say, I am about as amazed as you are! It fixed up so many of my files! Its amazing! I have always been looking for something like this.... And its also amazing how fast it did it.... out of my some 10,000 files, it only took about 5 minutes. h: THANKS! :icon_bigg
It's easy to find if you're on the old classic skin. Winamp's been doing this for years baby! :020: Can't believe you never knew.
And I cant believe it either. OH: I would always have to go search for programs that did it like that MusicBrainz GARBAGE! :020:
so still no explanation how it works uhh?? http://sazwqa.wordpress.com/2008/03/09/winamp-auto-tag-feature-2/
I would have to agree... AOL is definately a non-loved company by me. Almost hate it as much as EA.
