the RX 2020 is the 2012 model and its hard to find in the UK, right now we have the RX 2030 and thats arounds 1200 sterling pounds... but it does have alot of super video inputs and seems perfect! just waiting until the price drops or see if i can find a second hand one (i like to save money) you mentioned a transcoder can you shed more light on this? i was advised to get a XRGB-3 and get a External DAC and AMP and some Stereo Monitors and a Good sub... but i appreciate you sharing your information i have fallen for the Yammy AX series its just so damn sexy
I'm not sure if you'd need to go all the way up to the Aventage line for Yamaha's AV receivers - hit up their top-tier RX-V series for a price drop and still excellent performance, but even their mid-range is fine. Unless you're pairing the AVR with good quality components and loudspeakers it's probably a bit over the top. Each year the product range tends to changeover between June and August, and those are the best times to shop around. As long as the receivers have been looked after they'll be fine second-hand. The reason we jumped for the RX-A2020 is that it had full HDMI pass-through so it can handle 4K video (vs the 2010 which didn't) and we needed something better for HDMI management (plus HD audio is something I've wanting to indulge in for a while!). With the transcoder, I'm using something based on the CSY-2100 that transcodes RGB to component video with stunning results. The post's getting on a bit, but here's the blog post I put together talking about hooking it up. Keep in mind I game on a CRT for my retro consoles, so something like the Frameiester might be better if you're gaming on a HD flat panel display. I have hooked up consoles via the transcoder and it looked amazing, but never played anything that relies on super-fast response times (my usual test is the bonus levels on Sonic 3, and my display struggles updating stuff fast enough to make this as accurate as my CRT when taking 240p from the Wii in 240p mode).
alright thanks for the info.. ive been advised that around april is the best time for buying tech (in the UK) thats when all the new models come out so the price will be dropping for all Yamaha equipment. ill check your blog post.
Marantz SR 8001 http://www.soundandvision.com/content/marantz-sr8001-receiver-bench It's old, I think from 2006. Might be a better idea to pick a new model. Some Yamaha models have a decent vÃdeo processor. Mine does the job, but it's no perfect. It can't properly handle 240p over component video.
