So, I've always wondered, what kind of AV receivers do you guys use? I'm currently using two unpowered AV (component) Switches, a Philips one and a Pelican/Gamestop branded one which also has RJ45 connectors. I bet these unpowered ones suffer some signal loss and powered ones might be much better, but they are damn expensive. I'm interested in some Denon receivers, but last time I checked the cheapest ones were at $350 or so, didn't check used ones though. Anyway they're a bit heavy to ship internationally so unless I go to the states anytime soon I won't be able to get one. Any recommendations on brands, models, etc? It's a subject I'm quite interested in but never looked into thoroughly. Cheers!
I use a Cambridge Audio Azur 340r. Its well equipped and I have my PS2 and Xbox connected through component cables and sound goes out through optical 5.1. Megadrive and Saturn are directly connected to the tv via RGB SCART with stereo out to the amp. Optical 5.1 on the ps2 and xbox is a brilliant improvement over stereo
I use a huge old beefy Yamaha I purchased when I was in the trade. Plenty on inputs and outputs and more grunt than most more modern units. A couple of times I've convinced myself that I need an upgrade, gone out and road tested a number of other units and decided I wouldn't get anything I preferred.
I am running a NAD 785 with the HD add in cards and I really, really like it, however it might be more then you were looking to spend. The best place to start is to figure out what your budget is and then figure out what features you want it to have.
I have an old Kenwood KRF-V4060D which i happened to get free from a friend of my dads after my Cambridge Audio A1 audio amp stopped giving me sound from the right speaker output. I mainly use the receiver at the moment with my PC'S optical audio output but i did at one point have my ps2 and xbox set up to go through it to TV but i don't have the space to have it set up properly since i have a large CRT.
Anyone have experience with the Pelican System Selector Pro? I'm a little bummed that there isn't a FRY's near me. http://www.frys.com/product/4737609 Not available for shipping! Those things were normally $100...!? My main problem is the number of inputs for one device. I don't like having to daisy-chain when it comes to AV. Fortunately I have just enough component devices to fill all the slots on that switch, and a few composite that I hot-swap on the front of the switch (cheap gamestop/pelican one, the fourth input is behind a door and is just composite/S-video) but I'd love to have my Saturn and Neo Geo plugged in permanently.... But then I don't have the surface space for them either at the moment, and that's another story.
I almost bought one in Miami back in 2007, it was the last one we had in stock in the company's warehouse but I had already spent tons and tons of money and had no space left on my luggage either so had to pass on that one.
