We all encounter moments in games where we just drop our jaw awed by what we're seeing. For me a recent example would be that 100+ ninja fight in Ninja Gaiden 2 (360). Slow down and all I was just in pure awe over how amazing it was. In fact the slowdown just made it even more awesome and epic it's the crazy 88 fight of video gamedom. Another moment was beating Mega Man 3 the first time with my Grand Mother cheering me on. It was the first game I ever beat and to this day I still crack a smile when I top spin WIly's ass into oblivion. Shenmue......just the entire game and seeing it run awed me. Getting an XBOX and playing DOA 3......8 years later and the game STILL looks good. Playing Rock Band I'm just amazed that we've gotten to this point where we don't have chip sounds anymore but real music and we're really interacting with our games. When I first got my dreamcast I was floored. Some of the games still hold up to this day too. The Dreamcast like the SNES is truely a Timeless system. The Final Battle in Rez amazes me. Man I could go on and on and on.....I'm leaving out the final battle in Castlevania III too though truely epic with the 3 forms of Dracula. Well I'll stop becuase I'll have a 12 page Eassy if I keep going.
mother brain in super metroid, when i was younger and she turned into her 2nd form i nearly shat myself
Guilin in Shenmue II, I thought the game would end after Lan Di evading on the rooftops in Kowloon, was quite surprised to be walking through forests after! Oh, and when the two massive mirrors lit up in the cave... awesome.
GTA 3, i got that as my 1st PS2 purchase and knew it was a good game but as soon as i started playing it i was just in aww at it. It was all the good bits of GTA but 10x better and in full 3D and i was amazed and how fun it was.
I think most of my moments on the n64 were defining. This obviously includes Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, the Zeldas, Ganbare Goemon 64, Diddy Kong Racism, Mariokart 64, DK64, hell even Mortal Kombat 4 and Top Gear Overdrive, and of course F-zero X and X-pansion!!! Naturally I only play games that give me the magic-dick-tickle a bit or alot, so I d say that my defining moments are way too many despite being a naysayer to most games out there
These don't seem like moments... more like "Wow, this is fun" segments of games. No doubt, enjoyable. But what about those times when you feel high? I've never gotten that from anything but a difficult arcade game... namely b/c in any other type of game I've got a save point merely a few minutes back.
Totally agree with that.... Totally. GTA 3 was incredible at the time. Hell, it still is. Its my favorite GTA to date. I would also have to say Half-life and Half-life 2 aswell. :icon_bigg Then as soon as I found all the Singleplayer mods that you could download for Half-life... Lets just say, I had too much time, hahahaha. So amazed and awh struck by all the user created content... Great game, that Half-life.
For me: First Colossus in SOTC EDF 2017, the first map where literally thousands of bugs are coming at you and you can see them from the distance. (Too bad the game gets really repetitive for the last 35 missions) Oblivion and Morrowind's overworlds and how giant they were (Now they seem small) Dawn of War: My Tau defenses killing approximately 2500 Khorne Berserkers and making a nice metal carpet to the entrance to my base. Katamari Damacy - HOLY CRAP MY BALL IS ROLLING UP ClOUDS NOW Zelda 64 - About the same as Morrowind and Oblivion. Impressive overworld, although small. Far Cry - The graphics were insanely good for an Xbox title, and I remember the first part of the game being really atmospheric and awesome. It gets a little repetitive and the ending areas arent as good, however.
The only two that come to mind are Deus Ex and System Shock 2. I had only owned a pc for maybe a year or so, and up to that point I had mainly been playing Half Life DM/tfc/mods. Then one day when I was looking through the games at Target and came across a version of Deus Ex labeled "limited edition".(which actually turned out to only be the first 5-6 hours of the game, which I thought was strange since the package only mentioned it being limited and special. found out a month or two later it was recalled by activision because of similar problems). Although it is only an extension of the work done on games like system shock or thief it was the first game of it's kind I played, and since then I've been comparing every first person game I play to it. Developers working on titles around the same design philosophy that deus ex was based on are not only making games they are working on the future of interactive entertainment. While other developers are busy working on the grahpical potential of their games their are only a handfull who are pushing other, more important aspects of game design to the limit. GSC(developers of Stalker) are one of the few currently working in this "field of study".
Rhythem games do that. When you just get in this focused zone, and it's a hard song on RB/GH and you nail a solo without even thinking. You just see the notes and your fingers are like "OKAY!"
I always enviosned a KKK/nazi version of that cute little adventure racing game, because people's reactions to such a thing would be hilarious ;p nice play of words too! DKR is one of my favourite mariokart-esque racers actually, but it lacked somewhat in character personality beyond Banjo, Diddy and Conker.
