I think the title says it all, but here's the rather worrying story: http://doctorbulldog.wordpress.com/2007/09/05/b-52-bomber-mistakenly-flown-with-5-nuclear-warheads-on-board/ oh boy, an accident waiting to happen!
Was old news ... all demoted and fired. They were supposed to ship them for decommissioning, but noton that flight. Nukes are triple fused in USA anyway, so it's not like they could have gone off without arm codes. Still stupid.
Hmmmm, it's just hit the UK news today lol - just heard it mentioned on BBC News 15mins ago. Goes to show just how little information is provided "close" to the event
Compared to past events this is nothing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_military_nuclear_accidents If anyone wants the ultimate firecracker then check out the Tybee incident.
The BBC news website actually reported the start of the investigation into the incident back in September - that's where I learned of it! The real risk was of contamination on the ground, should the flight have met with an accident. I didn't know B52's could carry these things under the wings - I'd assumed that they'd always be in the bomb bay.
The Thule case is probably the most notorious around here when it comes to atomic weapons and so forth, between USA and Denmark. You can always look more up about this case, both on wikipedia and an arseload of other places. But to make it short, then an American bomber airplane crashed with hydrogen bombs in Thule on Greenland and the people who cleaned the fucking mess up got sick, and there was a courtcase, plus some files "missing" afterwards about the shitty mess and other stuff . It is probably one of many scandals there has been around here in Denmark. But as I said, the case is murky case. But not the only one. But one of the messiest in more than one meaning of the word.
The conspiracy theory behind this story is that the nukes were supposedly on their way to the middle east as the Barksdale base is used for staging flights to the hot zones. Supposedly the air force crews at Barksdale "revolted," which consisted of blowing the lid on what was a covert operation. That's the latest rumor anyway.
Doubtful since our carrier battle groups have "specials" in one form or another on board. I also wouldn't be surprised if we kept some within our WRS contained in Israel.
