Is there a modern way of backing up nes games? I have some protos I want to dump and I don't feel like dragging out the gamedoctor.
:concern: web search result: if you can shell out, a retrode OR retron. (for rom dump and save, need homebrew, not sure if any exist for retron) the former seems the most likely?! another would be a 'game genie/shark' with a parallel/serial socket and the relative app on computer, again, not done that, approaching subject with common-sense in mind. never dumped a cartridge rom myself, so be free to give this response the finger. :smile-new: all the best! [edit] nasty small keys..
I have one of these. Some work getting the drivers installed and may not have a script for every mapper, but works well.
The USB CopyNES is a very nice and versatile device, but does require (de)soldering skills to install it in an NES. Also, the Everdrive doesn't work with NESs that have a CopyNES installed.
All of these solutions have big flaws. The copy nes only works with a frontloader, which is the crappiest type of famicom...
It should still work with the top loader afaik, just won't fit in the case. You can just take the top off the console while you're using the CopyNES, since you'd be socketing the CPU anyway it's not a problem.
What was that usb device that was discontinued a few months ago? Don't know if it was 1:1.. Maybe make a EEPROM clip, to attach to the back of the PCB, so you don't need to desoler the roms.. Don't know if the capacitance in the PCB or bridged lines will cause a bad dump this way??... I smell an open-source (kickstarted?) Nes Dump tool...
FC Game Doctors can't dump games anyway. The most modern solution would be the kazzo project. I would try to obtain an original kazzo board rather than the INL version. kazzo is open-source. http://sourceforge.jp/projects/unagi/wiki/kazzo_intro_en
