So, I was cleaning out my basement & found some old things that I had from a camp I used to go to (1995-1997). I found a page from Next Generation Magazine issue 19 (July 1996). The subject of said page? Project Atlantis So, I decided to work on a little information gathering project (had a little downtime between final projects/studying for final exams) and this is my result (note: there's WAY too much to post here, hence why I'm just posting the link): http://web.me.com/celebi23/project_atlantis/frames.html If you have any other information not on my site, please feel free to post it/pm me
Nintendo already showed on video what atlantis was supposed to be, a system between gbc and gba, right?
Got a nice little rumor to share, thanks to monokoma (on the unseen64.net forums). There is a tiny bit of annecdotal evidence that Argonaut Games might have been involved (to some extent) with Project Atlantis: http://web.me.com/celebi23/project_atlantis/argonaut.html The main page has been updated as well I am, in no way saying that this is factual, I just wanted to pass on this possibility to everyone else.
Why does it look so misshapen in that photo from GDC 2009? It looks like someone put it in a microwave.
If I remember correctly it was supposed to be more powerful than GBA. It was this and the 64-bit NeoGeo Pocket that I waited for. Does anyone remember the rumours about the 64-bit NGP btw?
Eh? I though Atlantis was simply just the GBA during pre-production. Post GBA the next unit they worked on was Iris which essentially was a bit more powerful GBA with a 3D GPU. This in turn morphed into the Nitro when they slapped a 2nd screen on it and brought it out as the Nintendo DS. Part of it was a bit of an oh **** moment after sony announced they were working on the PSP.
So... you're basing the idea that Argonaut Games was involved in the development of Project Atlantis on the fact that they made the SuperFX 1 and 2 and that their headquarters was close-ish to the place where Project Atlantis was supposedly being developed? Sounds a tad flimsy to me.
If those rumored specs are to be believed, Atlantis would've been faster than the GBA. Pretty much, Nintendo had GBA+ level tech in the mid 1990's, realised that it would've cost too much to release such a handheld around then (not to mention the size of the thing, the battery required to power it and poor graphics performance). They scrapped the handheld entirely & restarted the project in 1998/1999. I am not saying that Argonaut Game definitely worked on Project Atlantis. All I was doing was presenting those 2 quotes and other facts & allowing people to make their own conclusions on the subject. I was merely suggesting that some sort of partnership was possible. That's all.
