Hi, Figured if anybody would know you guys would. I bought a fully backwards compatible PS3 on ebay. It was a Sony refurb, came in a very plain brown box with new power cord, controller, and ethernet cable. Runs fine. Tested with PS2 games and they look great. I have to upgrade the firmware from 4.31 so test "The Last of Us" on it. My slim is pretty quiet except when playing "The Last of Us" Then it kicks into overdrive. I heard this is normal since the game really squeezes out every ounce of power from the system. The fans seem to run all the time on the BC PS CECHA01. Is that normal? What other preventive measures should I take? Keep if vertical or horizontal etc? Thanks guys, Deka
Yes that is normal, even on a chilly winter night mine will do that after about 20 minutes, less than 5 on a hot day. Keep it vertical point, a fan at it. if you really want to extend it's lifespan open it and clean it once a month and pop the heat spreader on the RSX and put some Arctic Silver 5 in there, then put more on top. There are no guarantees though.
Yeah, its fine. Mine is identical and it does. But its quiet, so if yours is audible, I might be a little weary. But if it doesn't affect anything maybe it is ok.
I'd watch it on the original 60gb I've had mine overheat twice. Reballed it once. The latest time it overheated on The Last of Us after a 2 hour play through right before I was going to save/quit. On a related note if anyone's looking for a broken PS3 60gb w/box...I'm your guy.
Does anybody know if the Sony Refurb puts new arctic silver on the heat sinks? Anybody have any experience with the Sony Refurbs?
Lol, it really can't...I wish they had been more aggressive in fan speed on the PS3. I appreciate the fact that it's trying to be a quiet system, but when it kicks into over drive that typically means ok I have < 5 mins until my PS3 dies (at least on the 60 gb).
The Last of Us is the game I keep telling people to buy a PS3 for. Its sooooo good. Anyway, I just ordered some arctic silver. Figure I'd rather have the knowledge that I did it myself then trust anybody else. Any good sites with a tear apart step-by-step instructions? I know youtube has a bunch, any particular you used? I also have a bunch of security bits and stuff if thats needed.
Nope. As a matter of fact I don't believe Sony uses arctic silver 5 when new. I tend to find "Made in Japan" models have a small circular amount of whitish/gray looking paste, while Made in China models have this gray toothpaste poorly splattered about. Neither look like arctic silver though. I would echo in suggestion if the fans are turning on too quickly and loudly on a CECHA01, open it up, clean the old paste off, and put new one on. Made a world of a difference in my console.
Just purchased some. I figure its worth me spending the time up front than regretting it later with a YLOD... Any good how-to video I should look at?
I play the Last of Us all of the time on mine. Of course, it's on a CFW, so I'm running it from my internal harddrive. So my PS3 doesn't really have to try.
I don't actually recall needing security bits. The PS3 fats are rather modular themselves I didn't even need to watch a video. You'll just want to watch out for thin cables. There are a few tricky ribbons, but nothing out of the ordinary. Also make sure not to lose your wifi antenna! It routes from the front to the back. Once the mainboard is taken care of it's pretty straight forward.
Thanks everyone. The thermal grease arrives tomorrow. The thing is things with moving parts tend to die first. BD-ROM or HDs. ICs are pretty good as long as they stay cool. Hopefully I'll be good. It was nice playing a PS2 game in it though! Anybody ever use it for Super-Audio CD's? Does Anybody still make any?
I believe (according to the original box) that SACD's work flawlessly in the PS3. I don't know if they removed that functionality later on with everything else, but it works on the old Phats.
