I must have a curse or some kind of bad luck. I've had probably half a dozen headphones over the last 2 years and every single one of them lost the left driver. All of them. No wires broken or weak solder joints. They all had the left speaker driver die at some point leaving the right one fully functioning.

    Bad luck or a curse?

Hahaha, not going to lie, your post kind of scares me, because that is the exact thing that happen to my last 3 pairs of headphones. The left speakers all have died out. Pretty sure they were all Sony, too. My last pair worked great, & about a month after I bought them, I accidentally stepped on the right one, cracking it in half, yet still worked perfect. Then about 3 months after, the left one that was in perfect visual condition just gives up. My luck with headphones is awful.

Also, I would definitely say we are both cursed. I have enough evidence on the matter.

I had bad luck with my Sony headphones too (was years ago now, but went through 3 pairs - all replaced by Amazon). Was also the left side, but I wouldnt say for certain it was the actual driver - could have been a break in the wire, especially considering the left and right driver will be identical, it doesnt sound like a driver issues.

Had my sennheisers (earphones mx560) for about 4 years before they gave up the ghost & yep the left speaker gave out. It still works, just crackles a bit. Got some AKG's but not as happy as i was with the old ones.

Sony headphones are great for about a year, then they fuckup. I've had the same experiences as you guys. Headphones die so quickly most the time, my best mate goes through them very quick and he uses them for video editing.

It's very frustrating as these things are not cheap, $150+ and they break in a year. The one pair I bought a few years ago decided to die, I contacted the company telling them 2 years of light use was bullshit and mentioned how poor the durability of them were. The next day they sent me a replacement, free of charge. Doubt Sony would do that, but guess who you go with for replacements.

Apple head phones suck! But, the customer service is good to the point which their products are so unreliable that if you drop one in the sink they still replace them without question lol. :)

I have a pair of Sony headphones that I've had for at least 7 years or so. They still work just fine, but the pads have worn down to almost nothing, so they're pretty uncomfortable to wear. They were only $20, so I can't really complain. I now have a pair of Klipsch headphones that are awesome. They sound great, especially in the bass range. They're really comfortable too - the cushions are memory foam covered in leather. These were significantly more costly than the Sony pair, so hopefully they'll last a long time.

I have some Sennheiser headphones from 1982 and they still work perfectly. My father bought them new and never repaired them - great quality over 31 years of frequent use. I grew up with them and now I still used them in university. The foam is now gone and the cushion recently tore, so it was time to replace them with something new even though the sound is still as great as it always was. My new ones are from BOSE, in the $150 range, and they feel/sound great so far. Hopefully my reliable partner for the next 31 years :p

Bad luck. I had worse though. 3 of my 4 earphones (including my favorite) all broke on the same day. I noticed that only one speaker was working. I swapped it out, the other pair also had one speaker dead. The third pair had a speaker dead as well.

At least set #4 turned out OK.

Everyone here keeps saying to get Sennheiser sets so I will. I'm gonna get a set of their PX 90 model. Might be able to find a pair in the big city when I go in a week or so.

Also, I have a pair of Turtle Beach headphones that were made for original Xbox with communicator support that I have and hacked up for use on my PC. Never had a problem with them and been using for 8 or more months now. I did have a support pin for the left side fall out once but fixed it easily by melting the plastic so it is fixed permanently in there now. Never had any sound failure issues and they only cost $20 on fleaBay when I got them.

I usually have that same problem, either the left or right ear piece goes out. I go through about 2 a year, thought this year so far all of 2013 I'm still on my first and only pair...

I've had a pair of B&W C5s for the past 3 years, and I'm an abusive owner. The cord died once but I had that replaced under warranty, but drivers? Never had them die on me. Not even when i was using cheap headphones- it was always the cable.

I say curse, or (like you said) Sony uses bad drivers.

Just a question, but how much do you spend on headphones?
I've asked this to many people whom have had dying headphones, and the data is almost perfectly graph-able: The more expensive the headphones, the longer they last (to a certain point in cost)
