God forbid they shake up the now generic 3D platform genre with something quite interesting and new. Shame on them!
so there's no other way to innovate other than adding vehicles to a platformer? and more especially, to a hardcore 3D platformer with deep roots, like Banjo? and spell "nothing like Banjo"
There are other ways, but are they better? Who can say until more is known. You might see the game running in a few months and it might be fantastic. Deep roots? Two games doesn't really indicate deep roots. If there is one thing Rare are pretty good at, it's 3D platformers. I think you discount them too quickly.
Well, Rare hasn't been tops lately. I still like there games but there not as good as they were on the N64. I'm still waiting to try Banjo 1, so I'll have to see for myself if that was as good. I'm going to reserve final judgement until the game is further along, but I dunno about Rare nowadays. I was playing Perfect Dark the other day with some friends, and Goldeneye....damn, there good. I wish PD2 or a remake or an XBLA were to happen, but be properly made and like the 64 ones. I really do.
I'm super excited (as always when it comes to rare's new release), although I'm hoping it's going to be platforming awesomness we all know and love from good ol' N64 days :icon_bigg edit - just watched interview with rareware and yes indeed, this is going to be a platforming game we all love, but instead of acquiring new moves you'll collect and build vehicles, I saw notes and other components present, so no worries. graphically this is the most impressive platformer yet(looks insane!), getting it on day one. ahh, so excited!
The graphics look OK. The environments are a bit empty. I suppose there is still time for that to change though. It looks like a higher res. GC game. Perhaps that is where it started life?
Hmmm, got the original in the mail today, but 30 minutes in I'm not digging it much. Perhaps I need to give it more time though.
well you have to consider the context in which it was released. I mean 3D platformers were jut kicking off. Give it some retro-context and try not to think too much about it in modern terms and you ll find yourself in love by the time you reach later levels.
Oh yeah, I know that. I'm in Mario 64 mode. At the time the game came out, I was in 4th grade and thought it looked really fun, but never got to play it. At one point I was saving up for an N64 after playing my cousins, but forgot about Banjo. Mario 64 was the game I kept renting/wanting to play, but so far it hasn't got me like that. Mario 64 I still like to play. I dunno, like I said, I'm 30 minutes in. From what I've read on the interweb, Banjo Tooie isn't good, why?
Let's get something straight here: Mario 64 had a sense of openness and liberty. Banjo Kazooie isn't that sort of game. Unlike Mario's Exploration Platformer, Banjo is more of an Adventure Platformer with some puzzles in there for good measure. Banjo Tooie is a massive game with very very complex worlds that inter-connect. It will take some extra-game thinking (ie thinking about it while you're not playing but during the day) to wrap your head around the concept of its levels. Unlike Kazooie's smaller and more cozy levels, Tooie feels like you've been thrown into a new world to explore. It offers more "liberty" than Kazooie, has more moves, and the graphics are much better. If Banjo Kazooie is a children's book with magical forests and Witches, Tooie is much more like Indiana Jones. Tooie is huge and more complex and sometimes hostile (Cloud Coocoo land!) than Kazooie. Many people didn't dig it I think because it was a departure from the story-book-like concept into a "bear and bird adventures". It is also a harder game to complete, which naturally will put some people off. I think the perfect RARE trilogy to own on the N64 is BK, BT and CBFD, in that order.
I loved Banjo Tooie too, game was huge and had lots of awesome quests in it(much bigger than kazooie). I remember at the end of the game grunty said that she is coming back in Banjo Threeie, boy the wait is over! to me Rareware is still one of the top 5 developers in the world and every new release from them is a must have on day one.
I'll give it love. I absolutley loved that game, need to track it down again. It seems like some of it was too long or hard or something (HEHEHE) but I loved it.
I never liked the Banjo series all that much. I`m not saying these aren't good games, they just didn't do anything for me. Played both of them for an hour or two but couldn't be arsed to keep on playing. I remember the time when the hype around project dream built up, it was said that this game is for the n64 what donkey kong country was for the snes. Well, it fell short of that and I guess that is how I will be remembering it. Nuts and bolts looks like a very interesting concept and after seeing the videos, I`m very excited to check it out.
having played through the older DK:Country games and Land series ,DK64 didn't feel like a sequel to those. It was a HUGE 3D platformer, yet felt very formulaic and it got repetative quite fast for me
ah yes... i never did spend too much time on the game. but i'll never forget the rap... DK! Donkey Kong! His coconut gun, fires in spurts! If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt! :icon_bigg
