My battery is dead on my dreamcast. What are the best mods for this?

Here is a good tutorial on replacing the internal Dreamcast battery.

The video says all this but putting it in text for quick reference can't hurt right?

A loose ML2032 and a 2032 size battery holder is the cleanest fix and makes them easy to replace. In Principle any ML2032 (more capacity) or ML2020 will work.
Do NOT use CR2032 batteries as these are not rechargable and might blow up when the console applies charge current.

Just ordered a battery holder and rechargeable battery off ebay.

Is it necessary to replace the battery in the VMU units? What are they for anyway?

The VMU batteries are only used to play minigames or use the VMU on its own. It's really not needed.

VMU batteries tend to be empty roughly 3.5 femtoseconds after inserting the them anyway,
thank god it stores savegames on non volatile memory

I did the battery holder and ML2032 as well. It works great, and it's nice knowing that all I'll have to do is pop a battery in there when that one dies. I'm not really sure why they didn't use a battery holder in the first place.

    Cause
Becasue we aren't supposed to open the systems once we get them, or so they say.

Probably easier to solder a single steady piece, rather than two pieces that can go apart in the handling.
