I know many of us have complained about d-pads, we've been forced to use them with nearly every console we have owned. For one I believe the best d-pad in my opinion is the Nintendo 64's one. What do you think?
SEGA Saturn's d-pad is the best and the PlayStation 1 control pad (non-DUALSHOCK version) is the best. Xbox 360 made me the most mad. I was trying to play Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on LIVE, and I just smashed my controller because of it. I fixed it of course later on...
Saturn is the best controller ever for a home console. The D-Pad is heaven. I don't mean that crazy shit that the US and PAL land got with the 1st Gen Saturn mind you. That was awful. Anyone who says the PlayStation pad (Any version) has a great D-Pad needs their head sorted. Same goes for the Dreamcast D-Pad as well. Yakumo
I actually liked the Saturn US pad. I liked the way the controller curved. Though I admit the "d-pad" was a bit weird, and the triggers bust too easily. Though of all the Saturn controllers, I must say I find the Bomberman controller to be the best. That d-pad is fantastic and the shape of the controller is just right (IMO).
I'm a big fan of the D-Pad on the MadCatz Fight Pads, but the Saturn is best. Also, I'm liking the Vita's a lot.
No love for the MD 6-button controller pad? It was spectacular, equal to or better than the Saturn pad.
Oh hell yes. The MK-1653 is pure bliss, and my favorite controller ever. I believe the D-pad is near identical to the Saturn's.
Now that is the only good PlayStation Pad I have the PC version of that pad too. I also have a Taiwanese knock off Saturn pad that looks fantastic but feels like crap ;( Yakumo
I absolutely love my virutal D-Pad on my phone!!!!!!! I'm kidding. I think I'd be killed if I meant that. I do like the Vita's D-pad. Very easy to press all directions, but no too easy so that you can rest your thumb on a direction. Nice clicking feedback too.
The Playstation's was too unresponsive, felt like a dead fish. The XBox and 360's feel infinitely less responsive and about as useful as rocker switches would be. The Saturn and 6 button Genesis were great with the DS not being too bad either. Seems as the analog stick came of age the attention given to keeping a decent D-Pad died almost completely. Most 360 games treat it as something to use as a selector of on screen items rather than as part of movement.
Yeah the Japanese Saturn pad (and the US version that came out later) unequivocally has the best D-pad ever, in my opinion. It has just the right amount of springiness and angle of movement. However, I would say the European Mega Drive pad (3-button version) comes very close to that. I've tried all sorts of different Genesis/Mega Drive controllers - I even have the Victor Wondermega pad - and for some reason the European one is vastly superior to all of them. They all pretty much suck, except for the American 6-button pad, but the European 3-button pad is still better. It's very similar to the Japanese Saturn pad. Why Sega decided to screw over every region except for Europe, I've no idea.
I agree with you guys there on the Dreamcast d-pad, as soon as I first used it on Virtua Fighter 3tb I noticed I was jumping while pressing left/right... Sigh.
