For those of you who didn't realise Battlefield 1942 won Game Of The Year 2002 because it's sooo amazing. It's still reasonably popular edging into 2005 but now it's finally getting a worthy update. Forget Battlefield Vietnam, it wasn't a true sequel and more of a stop gap to pass the time untill BF:2 comes along. BF:2 is based on modern combat, much like the Desert Combat mod but done pro :-D With any luck I'll have a PC ready to play this beast when it hits the shelves...

Wow, everything besides the third screenshot looks incredible. Gaming sure is evolving at lighting speed each generation...

I have never played the battlefield games. I saw something on cinematech about Battlefield: modern combat, and thought it looked fun. Is it like a MMO(FPS)? With teams and everything with vehicles and whatnot?

The original was 32 player and you had different character classes who each had different weapons. The engineer had a bolt action rifle with iron sights, but also anti tank mines and explosives and a spanner to repair things. The infantry had an assault rifle, medics had a sub machine gun and a medkit, snipers had binoculars which could act as the eyes for artillery aswell as the obvious sniper rifle and there was the rocket man with his anti tank rockets for taking care of business ;) There was no requirement for entering a vehicle - anyone could pretty much wander upto any vehicle from any team and hop right in and do their thing and there was plenty of variety too: tanks, apc's, jeeps, mobile long range artillery, fighter planes, bombers the lot! BF:2 will meld all of that (probably with some changes though) and redecorate it for modern combat :smt023

  6. ...It's just like being in a real Battlefield, minus getting covered in real muck, bullets and body parts!

...Oh, and you can switch it off when it all gets too much.

Only if EA decides to include freakin' blood in their game will I consider buying it. No, I'm not a blood-thirsty bastard, but if it's "so realistic" (along with MoH), there should be red stuff.

Bah, not a fan of the series. I think it's kinda in the wrong spot between no realism at all (UT) and being very realistic (Operation Flashpoint). They need a gripping single player campaign (like OFP) to start with, and I was quite dissatisfied with the overall gameplay.

It's a game you kinda have to play online or in a LAN - the single player gameplay is exactly the same as multiplayer, just with retarded bots - so it's quite a crappy game on your own. And that's why I got ADSL :-D

The problem is the community. The freedom that Battlefield gives is the problem.

If i'm not mistaken, one of the first time i player BF1942, i saw a plane, and wanted to give it a try. After i entered the plane, 5 people from my team destroyed the plane, and as a bonus killed me, just because they have the rights to use the plane. Same thing with tanks...

Anyway, after 30 minutes i was back to DoD.

Hope BF 2 will use some kind of roles / rank system to solve this problem.

Yes there are some complete asses like that, but all the decent BF servers these days will kick people who kill members of their own team.
