Is anyone familiar with their internet service? They are offering 100 Mbs speed in my area now. One year contract averages out to be about 4,800 a month which is less than my current provider, JCOM. They also give you a 20,000 point coupon for the store I sign up through.

Currently JCOM is more expensive and has 32 Mbs service.

Is anyone using them? Has anyone heard of them? How widespread is gigabit service in Japan?

Side question: The lady said actual speed is 50-60 Mbs, so will a 54 Mbs wireless router be sufficient? Is that an actual max of the router?

I think anything above 30Mb is actually Fibre (but I could be wrong). I have 30MB cable, and it's plenty. Trust me. Unless you're downloading from a major hub (how often does that happen?) you're going to top out at around 200kb/s. That's still a great speed for just about anything. If you get a nice upload, and actually need the upload speed, it would definitely be worth it.

BBIQ have been pushing their shit in Kyushu for over a year. They are owned by the Kita Kyushu electricity board. Personally I say go with NTT (Yeah, I know they suck balls) Hikari Fiber ! You'll find that the price will be about the same or cheaper than BBIQ plus the speed WILL be faster  Oh and I really like the woman they have to do their adds now  But like GaijinPunch said you'll never use the speed.

Why wouldn't I use the speed? Last night I was downloadig at 600kb/s, but that was through Demonoid. That's where I'll be downloading from anyway.

I like to download sporting events from the US, like entire football games, so I'm usually transferring quite a few gigs. I'm also setting up my Norton account that gives me 10 gigs of online storage so I'll be having that transfer back and forth. And anything to decrease the lag on XBOX Live would be welcome.

Depends on what you're downloading, and from who. Torrents? You're lucky to get 300kb/s, but it does happen. I find that this is plenty for me as I'm downloading 700MB 1 hour video files most of the time.

You would need better latency for this... which you will only get minimal.

The only thing that I find massive bandwidth useful for is multiple downloads. I download a lot of UK TV shows to keep me seine from the crap on Japanese TV. Most of the time you're looking at 300kbps max but his is where the faster speed comes in because I can download 5 or so shows all at the same speed. Slows the PC down like buggery though.

But I want to do multiple downloads....heh. It's 3x the bandwidth for the same price. You wouldn't go for that? I just wasn't familiar with the company so I thought I'd ask around. That was my real concern.

Yeah, I'm downloading torrents. Mostly football games which are multiple gig files most of the time.

Would an increase in bandwith help with streaming? I sometimes stream the games live on the internet.

it would as long as the site you're getting them from can provide enough bandwidth.

It's not always worth it. Sometimes they have bullshit hoops you have to jump throug, shit policies, block ports, etc. etc. I know someone that works for my cable company (married to a gal I worked with for years) so I've always found it beneficial to stay w/ them. Twice I've moved into a new place and he's gotten my stuff installed in like a day... usual wait is 3 weeks.

Yeah I'm cautious about a change. I've been with JCOM for over two years and I really can't ever remember the service being out at any point. I was going to probably have both services for the first month so I can give it a test run without closing my JCOM account.

The BBIX deal is a pretty good one to look at, tho. Looks like it's part of a bigger company, if I have the correct website: http://www.bbix.net/index_e.html.

I just want as much speed as possible. :)

On a good private tracker, you can max your download speed easily. I used to SSH on my server and download torrents from there (100mbps line) and I usually got 5-10 MB/s, very nice feeling.

I've never bothered w/ the hassle. I get the crappy crowded ones. It's enough for me.

Private trackers exist to eliminate the problem with public trackers - people leeching a torrent and running away, thus drastically decreasing the potential life of a torrent.

Private trackers usually faciliate some kind of system where you can only download as much as you upload, or a variation of that. Usually it's a ratio system where you are automatically banned when go you below a certain ratio, usually around 0.4-0.8 (which is pretty stupid in my opinion).

Some trackers use better systems. I'm on a brilliant TV shows tracker called TVTorrents which uses credits. Basically:

For downloading 1 byte, 1 credit is deduced from your account.
For uploading 1 byte, you get 1.5 credits.
For seeding 1 byte, you get 2 credits. Additionally, if you're a donator that value gets increased to 3 credits.

The usual outcome is a somewhat healthy environment where all trackers are properly seeded simply because people need to raise their ratio/credits count to download something else.

Another good thing about them is that virtually all people do not block their upload, so if you have a decent connection, you can usually max it out, unlike the public trackers where it's a miracle to go above 30kB/s.

Most private trackers have registrations by invitations which further decreases the leecher count and only allows for 'good' people to come into the system.

There are of course more advantages and some disadvantages, but this are the main points.

    Hope that explains everything.

Thanks. I assumed that's what it was but I wasn't sure. I'm a member of Demonoid.

I use TVTorrents. I guess I have a lot of credits b/c I've not seeded in ages. I'm on a pretty strictly enforced porn tracker as well.
