What 2player ps2 games are out there like - Gauntlet legends - contra - double dragon - final fight - dynamite cop - golden axe can be 3d or 2d, just a good game where you run around or across the screen and fight bosses or get powerups

There was a Treasure collection released for PS2 recently, that'd certainly be worth picking up. Might want to look at Alien Hominid too.
There's also all of those licensed IPs like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu, and the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. I don't know how good they all are, but they're co-op beat'em up games.
Didn't even notice, to be honest. Once I saw Contra in the list I figured he was after side scrolling action games...
I think what he wants predominately is two player beat'emups/sidescrollers. I think I'd included the Dynasty Warrior series (except 1 and 2 but only because 2 is bad).
Just stay away of stuff like Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance, Final Fight: Streetwise and Urban Reign. My suggestions? The Warriors (like Phinn already said), Viewtiful Joe, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
