i don't know what to call this Modem Router since it's only labeled as "Belkin G wireless Modem Router" , hence I m having a hard time finding troubleshooting and other information. F for naming. The so-called Wireless capabilities of the router have as much substance as the air they claim to transmit over. It's slow, it's buggy, it's laggy and most non-PC appliances don't like its DHCP server - it manages to fuck-up even when everything is entered manually. In case you're wondering what devices didn't work on wireless (yes, I tried tons of combinations in the settings to no avail), the list includes the Playstation 3, the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo Wii, yet surprisingly the PSP operates. Please keep in mind that things barely work with security set to NONE. As soon as WEP 64 or anything more exotic is enabled I get a rainbow of network errors, most of them having to do with the router's inability to manage the internet connection on account for the wireless devices. F- for engineering It's relatively large, hollow, black and with a stupid base i can't remove D for looks I paid 65 euros for it. I m returning it tomorrow to get another budget modem-router, a tried and tested Netgear unit. F for value, I m upset that I have to spend gas money to actually go in and return this piece of shit. Avoid Belkin at all costs if you're even hoping to get all your modern equipment online in a home. Before I hear any wise comments regarding the eliticity of using a wired connection, I am happy to inform you that I tend to like not having to cover large distances with trails of network cables. I wonder how hard it is to actually nail a specification that WORKS all around for wireless devices. All of these modem/routers are supposed to offer the same services based on what's writen on the box, but the actual operation seems to be a game of luck.OH:
nope. I ve also changed the channels, 1 through 13, just in case. Indeed, some channels have more noise but alas it's nothing my previous modem-routers weren't handling well.
I had a wireless d-link PCI card which was bought along with what should have been a compatible d-link wireless router and it never worked properly if at all and eventaully it did start working but only when security wasn't on then finally just stopped working at all and the d-link support was terrible as when they asked us the model number they seemed to not know anything about our router then seemed shocked at the fact we were using a 2 year old router and then they supossed to send us a newer model up from the one we had but never did in the end. We bought a tp-link 108m wireless G router which has been very good considering it was very cheap, also looks quite good . Works well when paired up with a d-link pci card on one comp and a 108m tp-link usb adapter on the other. Never had many problems apart from the odd times when a quick unplug for a sec or two needs to be done but other than that it works as well as some more expenive ones.
the above quote is exactly why i teared down paneling from 2 walls and lined no less than 40metres of cable to get my ps3 online. it's not that i have anything against wireless just because it's wireless but so far where ever i try to use wireless connections it's always that same "oh, maybe it'll stay connected for that 2 minutes now." nothing more than bad luck after bad/randomly working hardware. i'll just rather go with cables no matter how convenient wireless is. Atleast now i'll know to avoid belkins. Too bad you gotta return it tho, Make sure to raise a proper ruckus about how shitty it was. Not worth the effort i guess but usually leaves a good feeling
Had a F5D7321-4 as a main router and it was painfully bad on torrents, so replaced it with a Buffalo and flashed with Tomato firmware and its working perfect. The problem with the belkins are not the hardware but more with the firmware part of it. Converted it to a DD-WRT wireless bridge and it works ok.
just my 2 cents~ I've been using NETGEAR MIMO wirelress G router - the one with flashing light dome and the subsequent model with three antennas. Never have any issue and all Laptop/Netbook/Desktop works as it should... ^ ^ They may not fastest around but for what our family need it's more than sufficient and I don't have to touch the thing once setup apart from changing the WPA(?) password once every second month~
update: I got a Netgear ADSL2+ Modem Wireless Router DG834G (click for pics and info) I feel like a million dollars, whatever that's worth these days. The device painlessly connected to EVERYTHING I threw at it, including the crappy Phat DS, the PS3, PSP, SE P990i and Wii. Paid 75 euros for it, tax included.
Just had my pc downstair directly conected to my wireless router and i was getting a constant download speed of 2.0+ Mb a second over the 800 or so Kb i was originally getting via my usb wireless and PCI wireless cards with files that were taking a few minuites to download were taking less than 50secs to come down. Not going to complain though as i don't download that much and hardly download large files and web browsing is as fast as i need it so not going to scrap my wireless anytime soon.
