I know some of you are punk rock fans, so I thought I'd start a bit of a specific discussion. Black Flag's discography was one of the first that I fully acquired, and I immediately noticed how divisive and polarizing some of their work was. While they weren't active for too long in terms of album releases (we'll ignore 2013's "What the..."), they left a huge mark on independent musicians, punk rock and really music in general. So, my question is, which album best represented them? What was their best work? I'm hesitant to say any album, but Slip It In is considered to be one of their best.
The only album I've listened to very much is My War. It's a pretty good album, I think. I like the song "Can't Decide". That song basically describes my life entirely. I've read that Buzz Osborne of the Melvins took a lot of inspiration from Black Flag. I would like to listen to more of their stuff at some point.
Their song is on GTAV, I hear it a lot. Also the DJ for that station is one of the signers I believe.
Prepare for a TL;DR... Here's TV Party. Definitely their funniest song, and it might be their most popular. I wouldn't regard it as their best, though. Here's the song "Rise Above" that introduced me to Black Flag. I always thought this was their most popular. This is "My War" which HEX mentioned. This one is also pretty popular. "Slip It In." I like this one a lot. I actually listened to My War on my way home from work. Great album. I also love "Can't Decide" and "I Love You" is pretty solid as well. The only thing about My War is that the final 3 songs are pretty divisive. "Nothing Left Inside" is my personally favorite down-tempo Black Flag song, though. Were you a Black Flag fan, GoH? They seem like a band you would enjoy. Probably Henry Rollins, at least I hope. I haven't listened to the radio on GTA V enough.
Black Flag is a band I've wanted to get into but for whatever reason never did. Now that I collect Vinyl I'm more interested in their work. Nothing like REAL punk rock on Vinyl.
Yeah, pretty sure Black Flag influenced NoFX a bit. Although NoFX did get formed only 7 years after Black Flag. Wasn't until Punk in Drublic in 1994 did they achieve full-scale popularity.
No doubt. I liked Punk in Drublic a lot. One of my teachers senior year of high school gave me the disc. Lots of good stuff there. Any other albums you'd recommend?
"Ribbed", "White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean", "So Long and Thanks For All The Shoes" are good places to start. NoFX is ok but over the years I tend to listen to them the least out of any of the other punk bands. I always liked 88 Fingers Louie and Lagwagon better.
That would be Keith Morris. He was their singer at some points during the band's history, but he is generally better known for being the singer of The Circle Jerks
Would make sense then, as he mentions "While I was a member of Black Flag". I really his paddywagon story though.
Circle Jerks are okay. Their first album is decent, despite being a little over 11 minutes long. Maybe I should just start a punk rock thread. I'd certainly have enough discussion ideas to fill it up haha. Paddywagon story?
