Now that game installations are mandatory for this console generation, the stock hard drive of a XBOX One will only hold up for a little while before it's full (especially when you keep up with all those games with gold dealings). I have seen multiple (sponsored driven, it seems) and now obsolete lists passing through of which external hard drive comes recommended, so I though my fellow ASG probably know better I would like to keep this list exclusively for 7200rpm or higher drives, to keep those pesky loading times at the minimum. I'll kick off; XBOX ONE: Hitachi Touro Mobile MX3 1TB USB powered, slightly faster then the internal stock HDD. As a bonus, I would also like to see which USB storage solutions for XBOX 360 come recommended. I bought two "Transcend 32GB Jetflash 760 USB 3.0-stick's" back when there was still a 2x 32GB cap in place. These USB sticks decreased loading times significantly, but now with the X360 supporting up to 2TB I'm curious too see which drive is the best for this system. XBOX 360: Transcend 32GB Jetflash 760 USB 3.0 Stick Cuts loading times significantly
y u no ssd? Sure, you probably won't be installing a 2TB one any time soon, but they're still bigger than a lot of thumb drives, and faster than a "spinning rust" type HDD.
@rso, SSD's are awesome but too costly to get some mass storage available. Surely Infinite Warfare is paving the way for other releases to go over 100 GB, so in my opinion a storage solution under 2TB will not really be worth your while anymore. I'm aspiring to replace my current 1TB external drive for 4TB model and will use the 1TB with my X360
Yeah, I keep forgetting people feel the need to store every gaem evar, all at once... Personally, I'm content with having the handful I'm actually playing, which should fit nicely even on a 256gb SSD (for the time being at least, but then again prices are dropping too). Internets are fast enough to (re-)download most titles pretty much at a whim. So for me, speed > space. Too bad those hybrid disks (eg Seagate's Momentus XT) never caught on though - often-used data is super fast (because nonvolatile cache), but still lots of storage.
With my internet connection it's not very practical to download the games over and over again. I exclusively buy my games digitally and would like start them instantly whenever I decide to play them, instead of having to download them overnight. That being said, It might be interesting to double dip in the storage department. One SSD drive for the current being played games and another one for storage / easy booting.
Not a hard drive but I don't really see why more people don't use one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01L6XDFVU?psc=1 for their Xbox ones, it looks a little bit better than just sticking an external HDD behind the Xbox.
This doesn't work if you have friends who like playing certain games. For instance, one of my friends likes playing BO3 with me, another likes playing Titanfall and Destiny, and another likes playing The MCC and Halo 5. If I didn't have friends who played all of those games, I wouldn't have Titanfall, Destiny, or BO3 installed at all.
For my Xbox One I use a WD 3Tb USB 3 drive. Faster than the internal Hard Drive and can be set as the default drive to write to.
This is a really cool solution, I did not see this one before. Unfortuatly for me I have a white Xbox One and I can't find this solution in the same color. However when using this with a SSD installed or a nice high capacity 7200 rpm 2.5" hard drive you'll be set =) The internal SATA connector of the Xbox One can't go as fast as the USB 3.0 connection, so actually you can better use an attachment like this and install a new hard drive than installing it internally. Could you perhaps post the exact model number of this drive, WD has a gazillion drives available
Whoops. Talk about retarded. Is there enough spare room (by installing the HDD the other way round or sth along those lines) to add a SATA-to-USB adapter and hardwire it to the USB port from the inside? That'd speed things up and keep the look 100% stock. (Or does the Xbone not boot up with only an USB disk attached? Seems likely, unfortunately...)
@wombat this is the drive I bought. It's actually 2TB. The 3TB was an internal drive I bought for my PC. WD HDD 2TB USB3.0 Elements Portable WDBU6Y0020BBK-JESN Link - https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00D5OT630/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Mine is black but they do come in other colours. I use a red 1TB modle for my take around HDD. Pretty rugged and come with a 3 year warranty.
Oh surely others are fast, but the licensed is green and with the logo and you know, kind of official. n_n'
Gotta love those USB hard drives. The only info you get is capacity, physical dimensions and weight, none of that useless technical mumbo-jumbo like rpm. No informed buying decisions for you! Btw, those HDD-SSD hybrids I mentioned still are a thing, even if a bit niche. I noticed it only because Samsung just announced a new one. Look for "SSHDs" if you're interested. My experience with them may be a bit dated - I installed a 'Momentus XT' in my laptop some time back in 2010 or '11, now it's in my 360 - but fwiw I think they're great.
