Hey all, new to the board, blah blah blah, crappy crap. I just picked up a Marty with mouse, control pad, and keyboard. I'm hunting for games, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there. I did see a YouTube video of Puyo Puyo, and the audio for it blew me away. Sounds so much better than the PC Engine version, IMHO, which is funny because they're both disk-based games. So any thoughts on what I should track down or avoid?
One thing you will quickly understand is that FM Towns games are quite hard to find and may cost you a kidney or two for complete copies of games.
HCK -Best FM TOWNS Games- This should be a short list ....how about best original FM towns games a list even shorter
It does have a really nice version of Emerald Dragon if you like rpgs and can understand Japanese. Image Fight is alright but nothing to great for a shooter.
So far I've really enjoyed Puyo-Puyo, Splatterhouse, and Viewpoint. I've been playing Brandmarker a LOT, bit I'm a little stuck now... I can't figure out how to change the 2nd princess from crystal back into a normal person again. But it's full of old school JRPG goodness. Should be getting New Zealand Story today or tomorrow. That looks good as well!
So are games like Tatsujin O and Rayxanber really worth the 20,000 yen and 25,000 yen I see them going for?
Tatsujin Oh is a great arcade port (almost 1:1), but the game itself has some serious design issues. It's just ridiculously hard, and that's not because of clever and intense game design but because even small enemies have way too much energy, the stages are long as hell and pretty boring for the biggest part. If it wasn't for the absolutely ingenious soundtrack I'd say it's one of the worst Toaplan shooters.
Rayxanber is pretty bad IMO but I loved Tatsujin O but it's not 20,000 yen good. I also liked the version of Raiden for Towns. Here's a FM Towns Software Database (JPN) http://homepage2.nifty.com/ftowns/db/sdb.html
I always liked the Viewpoint port by Ving. Splatterhouse was ok, Turbo Outrun was a pretty neat conversion...
I suggest Genocide Squared from zoom software, a compiled and arranged pack for the Marty and Fm-Towns computers (initially on x68000) with enhanced graphics (genocide 1 in x68 is a bit crappy), but lacks some parallax on genocide 2, has a HDD installer, and uses the optional MIDI board FMT-403 from Roland & Fujitsu (like a Roland sc-55). Check it some AMIGA games converted to Towns like Shadow of the Beast (I + II) and Lemmings ( I+II ), and other jewels like scavenger4 (novastorm) or Microcosm, Megamorph, or Awesome... the machine is a piece of cake ;-) - - - PD: As CHR_AeON said, a quite good neogeo port is the ving conversion of viewpoint ( i want some day pick one but is too expensive ). Take a look an inspired LAYER SECTION fan doujin & free called ALLTYNEX ;-D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pEWYJpOW8c Best Wishes ;-)
Yeah, I always found it strange that Psygnosis was so much into FM Towns development. Especially since a game like the "Megamorph" was never released on any other system (despite it being announced for the CD32, IIRC).
Wow, where do you see those? With patience you can pick up TO for less than 10k yen easily. Ray is a 5-7k yen game imo (with spine, a bit more I guess).* * That said, Yahoo auctions has been very dry of quality titles this year, and some prics have gone silly. There are quite a few decent FMT imo. Aside from the ones already listed (most Ving, Sega ports, LucasFilm etc are solid at least, if not superb, Ultimas too if you like them) games I really enjoy / some of the lesser known titles worth a look include (imo) Flashback Azure Dead of the Brain Marine Philt Mad Stalker Gorby's Pipeline Fatal Fury Special (FMT only) Syndicate (ditto) Little Big Adventure (ditto, needs a really juiced up FMT to run properly) Abel Cameltry Illusion City Ku2++ Legend of Kyrandia (and II) Libble Rabble Lord Monarch Mahou Daisakusen (FMT only iirc) Volfied Xak II and III (more due to the nice extras that came with the games) and more I forget at the mo.
It's also been ported to the X68000! But don't ask me which port is better... probably FMT due to the CD sound. And of course there's the all superior arcade pcb ;-)
Has anyone ever played "Rocket Ranger" on the FM Towns? Does it work on the Marty or is it for the computers, only?
I know. Sorry, you misunderstood. I meant that iirc it only works on FMT, not Marty. (like FFS, LBA etc) Prince of Persia 1 and 2 are very solid versions as well. I'll check RR and get back to you. (I don't actually own it.)
Afterburner for FM Towns is the best version of the game. Soundtrack is awesome compared to all other systems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKQJPrlgrf8
