I have been asked to put together some images for my uncles forthcoming website. Somehow they've got it into their heads that because I like photography I can piece together something interesting. So, I couldn't say no! Can anyone recommend a fairly good, straight forward graphics package / image manipulation package that's available free on line, but not as a 30 day trial? Thanks in advance.
You could look for something like Gimp - it was a linux tool, but I believe that there are windows ports now. Me - I just use a copy of photoshop elements that came with with my camera. It might be worth rooting though your old software CDs, as they often gave Elements away with scanners, digicams, printers etc.
I think The GIMP is the best tool for the job ( Windows version is available at http://www.gimp.org/windows/ ), however be prepared that it does not have a very intuitive interface (as in, it is rather difficult to use) but it is very powerful. Mac users should try out Pixelmator (http://www.pixelmator.com/), it is a fantastic program, albeit not free (about £30 or $59) and is worth every penny.
You could try out Paint.NET at http://www.getpaint.net/ It requires the .net framework to run, but thats it. Its a fast and lightweight program that should be perfect for almost anything. I would pick it over the gimp at any time
GimpShop for windows.....can't go wrong with that! also, if you need anything for web development, NVU is good too
