Well I've been looking in to getting a light gun for the Dreamcast but with that many to choose from I'm a little puzzled at which one is the best? I've heard reports some light guns not working with American versions of some games? I live in the UK but I own a Japanese Dreamcast thats modded to play imports.

Whilst searching I did find this amazing lightgun with blowback which is like some arcade units but I've yet to see one appear on ebay

I've got some standard Madcatz lightguns, had 4 but recently sold 2, they work ok so far with all the games I used them with, but damn, that lightgun from the video looks awesome!

I may have to look in to Madcatz ones then. Or hope that the one with blow back comes on ebay sometime soon

Wow thats an awesome gun. I wish i had one of those 20 pounds isn't that bad. I wouldn't grab that the second i saw it on ebay. I really like the arcade feel/look of it. Glad to see another new dreamcast item. (as in new to me)

These are the ones I have:

You can find them for about USD10 a piece. They have a VMU slot as well.

But I insist, that one from the video looks awesome, and the blowback feature is pretty neat!

The official Sega gun. Never had any problem when I was playing all those Dreamcast gun games, like House of the Dead 2, and, um.....

Virtua Cop was on the Smash Pack too, as I recall.

Would be fun to see that gun above passing customers here :p
I think it's even illigal to own (toy) guns that looks realistic (color wise etc) in the Netherlands.

As I recall, the official Sega light gun hardware didn't work on the US console because it was locked out. There was some issue with liability that Sega didn't want to deal with, which is why only third party guns were allowed to operate. As far as I know, this isn't an issue in any other region.

As long as we're recommending light guns, I remember disliking the Pelican model. It had a trigger with linear motion, meaning it slid back in a straight line rather than being on a hinged fulcrum at the top. I also prefer the Mad Catz gun.

I don't have the box in front of me, but I have some off-brand light guns that were very good, small and light (they were white colored and shaped light a Walther PPK). They were not too durable however and eventually the two I had stopped working. I was able to eventually fix one. Sorry I don't have a picture to post though. In my opinion they were the most comfortable to use. Back in the day I actually bought and tried out all the dreamcast lightguns to compare.

Thank you for all the replies! The two that pop on ebay the most are the official light guns and the mad catz ones so I guess I will have to go with one of the two. One light gun that does strike me is the SRC Bio Gun which is really similar to the Sega Saturn one. Don't suppose anyone on here has one? Would like to hear your thoughts on that one!

@Tchoin - Thank you for sharing the pictures. The mad catz one is similar to the official Dreamcast one in terms of design. I guess when Sega didn't release an official one in the US mad catz tried to make it close to the original..

@Momosgarage - The PPK style one sounds interesting. If you could get a picture up at some point would be good to see.

House of the dead 2 and Confidential Mission are the two I'm looking forward to having a blast on again when I acquire a light gun
