Just picked up a BNIB PAL Mega Drive II and I was wondering what would be the best way to connect it to my television since the included RF cable is poop. RGB SCART seems the way to go (?), but anyone have any opinions particular sellers/brands? There quite a few leads on eBay, but £11+ seems a lot considering how cheap and cheerful they look. TIA Edit 1: Any chance of hooking it up to a monitor? Thinking about it, maybe the monitor from my old Amstrad Mega PC would do the trick... Edit 2: Found this thread (http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3806), but I'm a little lost. Any help/comments appreciated
Well you are a lucky bugger because you can use a SCART for pure RGB. About the only good thing PAL game console have going for them. But if you want to use it on your monitor then you'll need a XMD-3 box. I just bought one of these for my Mega Drive II here in Japan so that I could get a RGB signal out of it. Over here TVs built in the last 7 years or so don't have scart for some stupid reason but all have S-Video! Anyway, this box will let you connect the MDII to any TV with a S-VIDEO input or any monitor that can display 15khz signal and has either a 15 pin analogue input (Looks like a big VGA input) or a 21 pin DIN input. Actually the 21 DIN output on this box is for connecting a RGB Scart lead too so you could use that on your TV as well. Yakumo
I got one a while back for my MD1, was about £11 from eBay, afraid I can't remember who from though. The signal was initially a bit shit looking, but putting in 3 capacitors fixed that and made it look lovely. They aren't really worth £11 but unless you can make your own, then its your only option
I tried making my own for my Spectrum, and due to my poor soldering skills and lack of equipment I did a pretty crappy job at it. It'll be a lot harder to make one for the MDII as they use mini-DIN plugs for the AV output (Speccy, MD I and a lot of other things used normal DIN plugs, which are about twice the size in diameter), and those particular ones are really hard to find - I think they are 10-pin or something like that.
Check here for (probably) every console RGB Scart diagram you'll ever need. And as you're in the UK, try Maplin or RS Components for the bits.
