guys, thinking about the older arcade units with the huge big screens (especially lightgun games like Virtua Cop 1/2 and Time Crisis) and was wondering, what would be the best TV to match this experience? Now, I know that HDTVs cannot use NES/SNES/Genesis/Saturn/PS1-2/Dreamcast guns so we need an old school CRT. However, the biggest tubes from back then were Projections, which forgive me if I'm wrong, when used with games, can actually hurt the TV. But then again, isn't this what the arcade units work for something like this? So, ASSEMbler crew, which (or what type of) old school TV would you recommend that I can use lightguns on? What would be the biggest? Thanks again.
If you want a screen that works with everything you mention, get a non-flat CRT TV. Mainly because the Nintendo Superscope and the Sega Menacer don't work right on a flat TV. About the size, I used both a 21" screen and a 32" screen, and in both cases it worked perfectly.
yeah, that's what I used to have, but keep in mind, I am looking for something in measurement to that of those jumbo screens you see with a lightgun arcade machine. kinda like these guys: http://cgi.ebay.com/NAMCO-TIME-CRIS...294?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a3f05c3e so in this case, the bigger, the better. However, I know that besides flat ones, there really weren't big CRTs (at least bigger than 32'') What type of monitor does the arcade flat screens use exactly? (I did forget about the Menacer and Super Scope, but in truth, I can care less) So, what type of television am I looking for that would support: NES Zapper SNES/SCD Justifier PS1/2 Guncon Dreamcast Lightgun Saturn Stunner If you know any or personally know firsthand, what model TV do you use or recommend? Thanks
Your best bet is to have a look round a few local second-hand shops, or do a local eBay search. I know for certain here in UK/ Europe we had the Mitsubishi (Diamondtron), 4:3 sets which went upto 36", and were popular in betting shops and the like. That was like 20 years ago, though. If you're across the pond, something like >>this<< or >>this<< might take your fancy. RCA and Zenith also appear to have similar large-screen CRT sets as well.
Won't any rear projection TV work with old light guns? I used to have an early gen 1080i rear projection TV and it worked fine with dreamcast and Saturn light guns.
Flat screen CRTs work fine with Lightguns, if a NON HD CRT. The connotation of Flat Screen sometimes mixed up as a HD. Rear projection sometimes won't work due to the image projection. Besides rear projection doesn't look great in a bright room or viewed at an angle.
Can you be specific? I thought it was all related to the refresh rate when dealing with rear projection TVs? As long has he can adjust the refresh, any rear projection should work with any old lightgun, even a modern one.
I still love my sony Wega 36" xbr . great picture just like the day i bought it back in 1998 and still runs like a champ. well woth the money spent then. i am sure you can find one for a fair price now.
I recently got a 27" JVC D-Series CRT. It has 2 Composite, 1 S-Vid, and 1-Component. It works great for light guns and actually has a really good picture compared to my other CRTs.
