Well basicly I've been wanted to install Linux on a PS3 for quite come time now, however I wanted to do it with a "new" PS3(or, not my main one), just to mess around with SPU/PPU. That being said, it would cost a bit of money, so I figured I'd try to pick up an old system to play around with. Any recommendations on where to start? Also, were would I go to learn about the specific versions and their mnemonics, whether it be x86, the Cell, or the various others?

    Hi :)

Linux on the PS3 runs in a quite restricted environment, to begin with.
IIRC you can only use two of the Cell's cores, no access to the RSX GFX chip and there might be more restrictions....

However, to just tinker around a bit it should be enough.

If you wanna do raw ASM (as I understood your post) here's some places I found to be quite useful while looking at the PS3's CPU:
