Space Quest 6 is probably the worst one actually. I'm extremely partial to Space Quest V, some people may not like it due to it essentially being a complete Star Trek Next Generation parody, but I found it hilarious and one of the more forgiving titles in the series. I also like the early parser titles (that's 1 to 3) and really hate 4, although it is a funny game for the most part. I just think it went a little too far with the deaths and timed sequences. If you feel like playing more recent titles, may I suggest Phoenix Online Studios and Daedalic. Phoenix Online did the Gabriel Knight remake last year which was very faithful to the original and they've also made some other really good games such as Cognition (probably one of the better adventure games I've played in recent years, despite the awful ending). Daedalic also puts out quality titles. Whispered World was amazing, I have never cried so much in a videogame. Deponia is another series from them which is closer in essence to Monkey Island. The animation is really high quality material. I also was pleasantly surprised by the Blackwell series from Wadjet Eye.
Quite a few reasons. First off, it wasn't designed/written by the Two Guys From Andromeda. Instead, Josh Mandel was the project leader and left at a very late stage of development and Scott Murphy had to finish off. The puzzles are all over the place and some are extremely poor, thanks to the fact that the game was rushed out of the door. It's not a bad game by any means, but it's certainly the most forgettable one.
Syberia has a great atmosphere, and is mostly interesting. It ends very abruptly, though... but there is a sequel.
I really like Escape From Monkey Island. It's not everyone's favorite in the series, but it's my favorite, probably because it was the first I played. I'd played Full Throttle before that, though. Escape From Monkey Island was a birthday gift from my uncle. He doesn't know much about videogames, but I think he saw the word "monkey" in the title and assumed that I would like it. He was correct.
Came back to warn y'all about the Broken Sword remasters, which I just uninstalled. While they do have bits of additional content, they either run in a teeny-tiny window, or scaled up in a horrible way (blurry and jaggies, somehow). Some simple nearest-neighbor scaling apparently was too much to ask... No sir, didn't like it. (Also, there now are visible/highlighted hotspots, which some seem to really hate - I didn't mind them too much myself.) BS2 might be better, idk, I only tried the first one, but anyways, I'd recommend grabbing the original versions if you have a choice. And to counter all that bitching a bit: The Monkey Island HD remakes are excellent and well worth their price. Legend of Kyrandia 2 is great, too (first one's okay, ignore the third).
Agreed on Broken Sword DC. Just play the original versions. Not a big fan of Escape from Monkey Island (which isn't a point n click adventure game, but anyway). The mood and tone is just way off compared to the previous titles, especially the first two. A lot of the jokes don't hit the mark and the whole Guybrush-Elaine relationship thing was unwelcome. She just ended up being a nuisance most of the game. Not to mention the dreadful Monkey Kombat and the ending of the game... It's not all bad, but a lot of it just doesn't work. I especially liked the swamp puzzle, thought it was hilarious. I can understand people liking it because they grew up with it (I did too actually), but to say it's your favorite one? Have you beaten the previous three games?
I think Dark Seed 2 is much more enjoyable than the first game. You probably can't go wrong with Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father 20th Anniversary Edition. Even though they couldn't retain some of the original voice actors, probably due to Tim Curry's poor health. None the less it still seems to retain it's original charm. Oh, also to throw out another more current title, Gemini Rue comes to mind. I've only played a couple hours of it, but so far it's a pretty impressive, well made game. Great dark cyberpunk story.
There was also a book published about the subject, I'd recommend haven't read it but it does looks great! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/14...17145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=146095579X
Also on the Sega CD there is The Adventures of Willy Beamish. It's a really cheesy game, but it's not like the Sega CD has a huge and diverse library of games, so I would recommend it.
The Quest for Glory series is easily one of my favorites, especially Shadows of Darkness. And let's not forget Blazing Dragons, based on the animated series. I quite enjoyed it when I played through it on the Saturn many years ago...
HardcoreGaming101 totally rocks. The book is practically all articles from their website compiled into one big ass collection. It is quite awesome . I recommend checking out their website, they do an amazing job. http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/ The Sega CD version is a port of the MS-DOS Version. The CD-ROM version for MS-DOS is far superior, with much better colors (remember that the Sega CD can use about 64 colors), slightly higher resolution, probably slightly higher quality audio and obviously full mouse support.
I played the first one and Curse of Monkey Island. I haven't played Monkey Island 2. Humor is definitely a big part of why I like the series, and I think Escape From Monkey Island is really funny. Other than that, I can't really say why it's my favorite.
Why do you think so? Also, just to satisfy my curiosity, I wanted to grab Phantasmagoria. Anybody play through that one?
I can't really comment on Phantasmagoria 1. but I've played through Phantasmagoria 2. If you love cheesy B-Movie 90's Horror and Sci-Fi, you'll love this one too. I mean just check out this trailer:
That beast came on 8 discs. I heard it's pretty bad, but I have a soft spot for lower quality games. About how long did it take you to play through it? Pretty sure it's on Steam or GoG.
