Trying to leave the question as open as possible, but mainly wondering which emulator works best on a portable system. My dream of Nintendo licensing the system to other companies to come up with an official handheld won't ever come true... Ideal would be something that runs 90% of the game library (and I don't even include FX or SA-1 games in that number) at full speed with no frameskip or speedhacks on a screen with a resolution that doesn't require upscaling. SnesTYL on the PSP is quite nice but it doesn't seem that it's updated anymore and doesn't have the compatibility of Snes9x which it's based on. Has anything replaced it or does any other system offer a better solution? Please share your experience.
I have heard that the new GamePark Caanoo handheld, is supposed to be better than the PSP for Snes emulation. I however have not got one yet, so cannot give you my personal opinion. Dan.
I seriously hope your joking....I've been following the OP project since the start and although it's a impressive device, the organisation is diabolical. If ninty, Sony or Microsoft asked for full payment upfront for a system that wouldn't be in your hands for two plus years would you buy it? And even when you get said device it only lasts weeks before the controls break. Sorry for the rant but this is a paticular subject that really gets my blood to boiling point. Open Pandora is a joke because of poor management.
I remember paying the full amount upfront back on Halloween 2008 (or early November, I think?). I actually thought I'd get it by Christmastime... The handheld released this May. May 2010. Although, I'm glad it came out as "good" as it did and it is an amateur project. THE ORGANIZATION DOES SUCK THOUGH
It's one of those "good" ideas that's never gonna be profitable because of the sheer slow manufacturing process....and the main reason for the slow process is so the guy/guys who are making it can keep costs down, so it's kinda a made upon request service. Now I see many flaws in this approach but my favourite ones are that they are just making the orders for parts cost more for themselves by buying many small shipments of 100 or so parts when it makes more sense to just get big bulk orders...I mean in theory he's got 4000 preorders PAID IN FULL which if he's competative prices would easily buy him 6500+ units, so why destroy your profit margin buy making the parts more expensive than needs be? But the biggest reason this is destined to fail is because just 5 guys are putting these things together......just 5 people, before the first batch is finished a competitor will have gotten hold of one (Gamepark holdings I hope) rip off the design and mass produce something similar. ON TOPIC: you can't go too far wrong with a GP2X F200 or a WIZ/CANOO type device...my wife uses my F200 far more than I ever have and she says mario and many early to mid snes games work well....but the later ones suffer with sound and texture problems but the newer consoles have more power so should be much better.
DS supports SNES PSP Supports SNES I prefer Playing it on the NDS, but i you will need a flash card. Don't get an R4 no matter what.
If you want something portable better than the PSP SNES emulator, get a laptop. Otherwise you'll have to wait until 3DS comes out and gets hacked and then an emulator gets ported. Or PSP2.
I have to agree. Most games work very well. I've been using the various SNES PSP emulators since they started coming out 5 years ago, you usually only run into big problems with games like donkey kong country or Super Mario RPG. Even then, IIRC there have been more recent updates to the emulator that I haven't used yet. http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/ usually has most of the variations on it. But if that's not good enough, (I have no experience with it) The Pandora seems like it might be what you are looking for.
Donkey Kong Country? Do you say that cause you assume it uses some special chip? It's apparently a common misconception that DKC uses something special which is not true at all. It's got the exact same hardware available to it as Super Mario World did. The only difference is the ROM memory size is much larger. But it has nothing like the Super FX used in Star Fox.
No, I say that because over the course of SNES emulation on the PSP's lifetime. DKC hasn't run very well without major frameskipping that's why. Nothing related to any special chips or whatnot
That's very strange. Other games must suffer too then because plenty of other games do the same things DKC does.
Well, in my experience as I recall with the games I tried, it was Super Mario RPG, DKC 1-3. Those are the only I can recall at the moment. I could test out all of the emulators with possibly demanding games. But, my 1000 is lended out to my friend at the moment and I only have my 3000. So I can't.
Oh yeah.. I forgot to mention... I actually paid for a Pandora in full near the end of 2008, but took a refund on it. I made a wise choice.
Why? is it no good? Just the organization? I remember it looked promising. I haven't looked anything up about it in a long while.
It is a good device but the organisation of it's development and production have been pathetic at best....long story short over two years waiting for the first batch of 4000 and only 2000 so far have been shipped with most of those having faulty control nubs....second batch is already sold out btw, what a joke.
It's been promised as the run-everything portable linux multi-emulator for well over two years. That being said, it does look like something I'd like to have, if I didn't have to wait 2 years for it. Are those Gamepark units (Specifically GP2X and Canoo, and the new one advertised on Play-Asia) really good at emulating SNES and other machines? I never trusted them, and thus have never gotten one. I just carry a laptop with a gamepad. Heavy, yes, but I really just play at places that have desks and chairs. For a really portable experience... I'd say those Korean ones if they do work. Now, are there good emulators for Android? That might work.
the point is that there is no real good answer to such a need. But i'm sure that in a year or so something will come out of china good enough for frameskipless emulation
