There are 3 SNES portables: FC 16 GO (rev 2 seems better than 1), Hyperkin Supaboy and RetroDUO Portable. I'd like to know which seems best overall, especially in term of screen quality and works with most SNES games. I plan to get one and have it with SNES Everdrive.
Clones generally tend to suck. Also... an Everdrive with a clone? Isn't the whole point of the Everdrive to be able to play any game on the original hardware? Doesn't the fact that it's not original hardware kinda defeat the purpose?
True but who would walk around or ride public bus with regular SNES, a small LCD TV, and a rat nest of wires to connect SNES to TV, power for both SNES and TV, and separate controller? A portable SNES would be so much easier to play on the go.
So far I only own the FC-16 GO (1st model), I wanted the supaboy, but I gave up because of the issues reported (hissing sound etc...). The FC-16 Go works well, I have no problem playing my original games, including special chip ones, except S-DD1 (both Street Fighter Zero and Star Ocean does not show any graphics see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK4u7C8VR_k ), the super everdrive and powerpak works.
IMO a Dingoo or Wiz or another emulation device would suit you perfectly. Now stone me for saying Jehova.
I think its safe to say that the best portable Snes is a PSP, the emulators you can put on that thing is amazing. and you can get then now dirt cheap.
Although oppinions differ on how portable a PSP really is. ^^ Edit: I mean it's huge and has shitty battery life iirc. Been a while i held one in my hands.
I have a PSP Go and its preaty good for emulation, its very compact and the button layout works well for snes games. and as for batteries even those dedicated portable consoles dont last very long. Also those consoles usualy go for 100€/$ even more sometimes, and nowadays you can get a almost new psp for 90€/$ not to mention that it has a big range of emulators and some decent PSP titles from itself.
well, the standard Dingoo is ~75 bucks: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/dingoo...lator-game-console-4gb-built-in-mini-sd-23032 IMO still the best option for retro gaming. If someone wants 3D stuff a PSP is obviously the better option. There are also those Android gaming handhelds, which are said to be rather nice despite the shitty looking PSP knockoff cases, which chinese seem to love... http://www.dealextreme.com/p/jxd-s6...fi-g-sensor-tf-white-cortex-a9-1ghz-4g-115345 That said, i'm not sure if OP is ok with emulation or if he seriously(?!) wants to deal with carts and stuff.
The Hyperkin Supaboy seems the best to me just from an aesthetic standpoint. It matches the design of the SNES, where-as the other 2 look more generic.
I own the FC-16 Go 2nd model and it´s quite compatible with US SNES games. But when it comes to Pal games it really lacks compatibility. Therefore I have backordered the Retro Duo Portable now... If you tend to only play US games you cant´t go wrong with the FC-16 Go as it has no sound issues and uses a good D-Pad.
The SNES emulators for the PSP leave a lot to be desired in terms of speed. Most games use hacks, and then they are barely playable in my experience. I guess if you want to play slow RPGs and strategy games then it's just ok. Now, emulating Genesis/SegaCD, that works great. Picodrive runs everything I have tried quite well and fast at 60 fps.
You should use the time on the go to do something a little more constructive like read. The SFC is much better played on a decent CRT TV with no chance of going "Oh bother, I missed my stop 5 stations ago..."
Hi there, first post here. Hello everyone. Best portable SNES eh? a subject I like a great deal. Well for portable on the move, Retro Duo Portable 2.0 core, hands down. From my experience with my own one, it's fantastic. Truly is *like* a portable region free snes. Works great with my super ufo pro 8. Soon to be sd2snes or everdrive I hope. Controller works when plugged into it, but it's own d-pad isn't too bad either. But yea you can use snes pad if you're a purist as it works in mobile mode too, for ultimate feel. Screen is like composite signal but sharp good quality composite. Colours good. Sound good, even on UN squadron in my opinion. Only problem is saving, as it seems to erase save games from genuine carts. be careful....I use my super ufo pro 8 and save my save games to SD Card. which means after play, power off, power on, SRAM to SDC. That way you won't lose saves. A cart that automatically saves to SD Card would be ideal. In my experience the RDP is far better than anything a PSP can do. If you put the RDP2.0 and a real SNES side by side in a kiosk, and asked people to say which was the real snes, they would have a job telling you which was which going by gameplay sound and feel (with a real snes controller plugged in). I guess I could tell if I actually did this though but I have played mine back to back numerous times and not noticed any difference. I'm not saying it's perfect but it's very very good with it's good old fashioned hardware horsepower. Far far better than software emulation, which I also love. But software emulation feels to me like a novelty. I far prefer "real hardware", even if it is "just a clone". (a la' bladerunner) For reasons, too many reasons to list, stay away from Hyperkins Superboy. I kept my 2nd one but that's just because I love the snes. Had it been anything else I would have returned the 2nd one too. screen crap, sound crap, cant use the plugged in controller without connecting A/V cable. Screen was blurry like vaseline. backlight leaking through front casing above supaboy logo. Just utter crap. Bah, see I couldn't be bothered listing all it's faults but I ended up doing it anyway, to save you, the reader. See? that's how bad it is! RDP2.0 FTW! But obviously going non portable, REAL (NTSC) snes with RGB + XRGB Mini and a fucking huge TV (dream SNES setup!) By the way this was actually my first post on this forum, but it didn't appear/kept disappearing so I had to re-type the whole sodding thing, which is why I have been brief. Apologies. I just had to add my 2 cents since the RDP2.0 is so good it deserves praise. Maybe we can get one with RGB out next or perhaps it can be RGB modded? Ok, well that's just about enough from me. Have fun, I spose you've got an RDP by now anyway.
