Phantasy Star on Master System has some pretty neat 3d style dungeons in it.

and The Sonic Series on the Mega Drive

EDIT - I don't know about them pushing the consoles to the limit I just know they had impressive visuals for the time.

Zero Tolerance and Toy Story (only one stage though) have some really nice smooth 3D [Doom style] graphics.

"Hard Drivin'" also looks like shit now and runs at about 7 FPS but it's fairly technically astounding I think.

    Hard Drivin' > F Zero.

Sword of Vermillon is a great but very early JRPG for it's time + Great Soundtrack! ;) as for imports if you want something challenging i suggest trying out "Ninja Burai Densetsu" Easy to pick up & play sort of Tatical RPG for it's time as well! Kid Chamellon is a very awesome platformer & Shinobi 3 Return of the Ninja Master is a very Great straight up action platformer!

Mega drive, the "classic" Disney titles such as castle of illusion, quackshot, world of illusion on mega drive. There were some later titles like Goofie's something something, it's crap.

Master System again the disney titles castle and land of illusion. I personally like the version of ghouls n ghosts on the master system as it isn't stupid hard.

I've said it many times before, but I'll say it (at least) one more time: Vectorman. It's one of the more graphically impressive titles on the Genesis (I think), it has an amazing soundtrack, and it's fun and challenging. Plus, if you beat the game you might win $25,000 or a Sega Saturn!

Some other good ones that haven't been mentioned yet (some of which are multiplatform):

    Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
    Streets of Rage
    Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
    Thunder Force IV/Lightening Force
    Virtua Racing

Lets be honest once youve played Gunstar Heroes you are required to have a copy on every compatible device you own.

Land of Illusion on the Master System was pretty cool, as well as Wonderboy in Monsterland.

Maybe not the best , but defiantly my favourite for Master System is Wonder Boy 3 - The Dragons Trap
and "Virtua Racing" for the Mega Drive the 3D must of been taking the hardware to the limits & I always thought "Aladdin" was one of the better looking titles.

On the Mega Drive there are just too much good games. :)

I love Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Zero Wing, Tatsujin, Sonic 3, Vapor Trail, Monster World IV, Ristar ...

Virtua Racing used the SVU, which was an extra processor included in the cartridge itself, similar to the SNES's SuperFX.
