Yeah, except you can actually do that and it works.

So its not really a cock up.

You are cutting off the extra PCI-E lines and the card runs at the slower speed. Its well documented on the internet.

The only reason this didnt work is because it sounds like he put it in a PCI slot, not a PCI-E one.

At first I thought you were saying that a PCI-E card would work in a PCI slot if you cut it, but there wasn't anything on the Internet to support that
Then I got what you were actually saying, and apparently the Dell Dimension 2350 doesn't even have any PCI-E slots.

I've never liked name PCI Express for the slot though, it's way too easy for non-tech savvy people to confuse it with PCI.

Not because of the reason you posted. Your picture was all about cutting the connector - which is a valid mod.

Only found the PCI part by reading the rest of the thread you linked to.

I used to be on Tech-forums. When I was, like... 14.

I've definitely never heard of anyone cutting off part of a card so that it will fit.

Worst mistake I've seen was a kid frying his CPU in his sweet/stupid "gaming rig" he was building in high school. He brought it into the computer systems class and one day during a slow tech support day I went in, took the CPU off, and found that he had left the plastic sticker on the bottom of his heatsink. And then applied about a gallon of thermal paste.
"It worked great for like half an hour, then it just died!"

(Though I guess my good friend built a PC and when I went over to diagnose a lack of power, I found that he didn't install the motherboard risers so the board was shorting out on the case... somehow he didn't blow anything up.)

Then the day after I had to fix another kid's molex plug he managed to rip-off of his video card. -_- The instructor was pretty amazed at my MacGyver skills. I guess that's one plus when you're the son of a weirdo engineer.
