I don't get why so many people are voting for the Gamecube versions. Was there really anything special in them compared to the DC versions?
Director's Cut Dual Shock Resident Evil 2 on the PS1. RE3 on Dreamcast (the GC version does not include the extras of the DC version).
I played (and finished) both on the PS1 and would suggest those before going to the other versions / port. Not going to talk about graphics or sound really, but i would go for the original experience, no matter how dated the graphics look.
The Dreamcast and GameCube versions look like they've been run through a filter and had anti-aliasing applied clearly as an addon. Same with Dino Crisis. Completely playable and better looking than the Playstation versions but not up to par with what should've been possible. The real problem is that the Dreamcast controller isn't what either were designed for and you can tell.
1: Saturn 2: N64 3, CV: DC 0, 4: GC If not, get them all for Game Cube and play with the same controller.
seconded for the PS1 duel shock directors cut of RE 2 and i believe there was a directors cut on RE 3 not 100% sure on that i just know there was a similar special edition RE 3 as with RE2 directors cut do the gamecube versions even include the special features of the directors cut?
To the people who say N64 for RE2: isn't it missing a lot of stuff that was in the PSX version? Music, speech, cutscenes, etc? On the subject of RE/Biohazard, is 3 even really worth playing? I've heard a lot of bad stuff about it, so I never bothered to try it. I think that's the only RE game I haven't played actually, other than a few of the lightgun games. Also, it wasn't part of the OP, but the Gamecube remake of the original RE is also amazing. It's my favorite in the series. Unlike the PSX games, the GC remake still holds up pretty well graphically.
actually it wasn't that bad at all RE 3 it was defiantly much shorter then RE 1 and RE 2 if you were slow lazy or scared in RE1 and RE2 they could easily take 24 hours while RE3 is less then 6 hours
That's true! I forgot about that ! hahah sorry ALSO just for clarification people, The Gamecube port of 2 has all of the features from the Dualshock/ver on the Playstation.
Actually, it's about as complete as the original PSone version. I should know, I've played the original game on PS1 and I've done a Claire A run w/annotated commentary of the Nintendo 64 version. =) If you are interested here is the full playlist showing all the videos of Claire A and the Hunk scenario, as well as the features of the N64 version. Taken from my PEMNAS video playthrough info box: I got the N64 game for $10 on eBay, so it's not expensive to buy. If you favor the exclusive stuff like the item randomizer, violence adjuster, instant loading times, costumes, controller options, go right ahead. But be sure not to spend more than $10 on it though. Any more than that is a rip-off. If you are going to experience RE2 for the first time ever, however, I suggest seeking out the PSone, Sega Dreamcast, or Gamecube versions. Since they feature much better quality in music and FMVs, you'll get a better presentation that way.
Have you compared the GC version to actually emulating the Dual Shock version via CubeSX / WiiSX on a GameCube or Wii? i'd love to see a capture via Component.
Here is my 2 cents. Resident Evil 2: N64/DC, the N64 version has some extras not available in the original, plus it has various controller modes and Dolby Surround, but it lacks the Extreme Battle mode. The DC version has everything the PSX version has, in higher resolution with extra content (the VMU indicates your health just like in Code Veronica). If you're playing the game for the first time, get the DC version, after completing it, you should play the N64 version to get the whole experience. Resident Evil 3: DC, it has all the extra content available for the game, and just like Resident Evil 2, it runs in high resolution.
Both? Definitely Dreamcast for looks or RE 2 N64 for content. The Gamecube edition is merely a direct-port of the PSX Dual-shock edition.
i'd go with the n64 version of RE2 first and then move to DC or GC, because it will be hard to go back to lower resolution on n64 after playing it on the 128bit consoles. as somone pointed out the DC ports have the health status on the VMU which is really useful. RE2 PC looks best using glide you really need to give RE2 a shot, it's really amazing.
