Since I'm over in Japan I figured I was always going to be screwed on the connection, but now it seems I'm so far down the line that it's getting hard to play Halo 2 anymore.

I'm using a Linksys Router WRT54GL router. I've done the connection test on XBOX live and managed to get my NAT to the "open" rating, up from "strict." I thought that would help but no dice...

I've tried port forwarding, giving priority to certain ports on back of the router, etc.

For port forwarding I'm using 3074 to 3074, both protocols, and choosing the static IP address I have set up for my XBOX 360.

I've enabled the QoS giving the XBOX the highest priority.

Oh, and I hjave no idea what the above means, I've just done research on the internet and that's what it told me to do..heh.

Is there anything else I should do? I easily have the worst connection out of 16 players in a Halo 2 match. About half the time I'm at yellow bar or worse. Killing someone means I usually have to get about twice as many hits as they need on me....and that's getting old!

    Thanks!

If you're playing then your problem is most likely latency and not the connection per se. If you are in Japan and you're playing fast FPS-like games you need to find people in Japan playing them. If you play with americans, then your network packets need to travel from Japan to USA and then back again to Japan.

The following is from the top of my head but i believe it to be correct: If you assume your network traffic travels lightspeed then it would still take 1 milisecond per 300 kilometers. Now calculate how far you are from the people you're playing with, multiply that by 2 for a round-trip and divide that by 300 and you'll see the absolute best ping time you can get without using a black hole to transport your data :) Add to that the fact that routers and switchs cause delays and the fact that your network traffic will never travel all-lightspeed...

Conclusion: FPS games or anything that requires a fast response requires your opponents to not be on the other side of the globe.

That's pretty much it too. You're just lagging with that high latency and the game was programmed in a way that poorly handles it. Perfect Dark Zero handles hits somewhat better because when you shoot someone on your screen, they are hit. Many games actually send that you are shooting at point XYZ and it's up to the host or perhaps just the victim if they take damage or not. It can be really annoying if there is significant lag.

This is something that badly needs to be addressed too. We need low latency for these lag fast paced network games. It's sad going on into the "next generation" with such great technology and still having the same old LAG troubles. And you'd think they'd do something since online gaming is only second to online porn.

Sorry I was looking more for an answer along the lines of "Change 1 to 2, unckeck the box on this page, then reset, and your connection will be better than God's."

    Is Santa still available?

    heh...thanks for your answers.

I posted my settings in another forum so I thought I'd poast them here as well in case someone sees some glaring mistakes.... Thanks!

    Router: Linksys WRT54GL (Firmware v4.30.5)

    Port 2: XBOX 360
    Port 4: This computer

Wireless: 2 other computer using wireless access through this router.

Static IPs set up for 4 machines: Computers (x3) and XBOX 360 (x1)

    Port Range Forward Settings:

    Application: Xbox
    Start: 3074
    End: 3074
    Protocol: Both
IP Address: (I have a static IP for my xbox and I’ve entered the address here)

Looks like I also set up something called Explorer str which uses port 7000 to 70007, both protocols, I set my the machine I’m using now. I don’t remember doing that, must have been hitting the crack pipe pretty hard that day.

    Port Triggering

    Default, no changes made

    DMZ Host IP Address

    Disabled

    QoS Settings:

I followed this guide for the QoS settings:

    http://vonage.nmhoy.net/wrt54glqos.html

    ** Upstream Bandwidth: Manual, 157

I got this by running a test at www.dslreports.com/stest and used 90% of the number.

    ** Device Priority:

xbox, Highest, MAC address obtained from the 360 menu

    ** Ethernet Port Priority:

Port 2, High, enabled. The XBOX 360 is plugged into Port 2 on the back of my router.

    ** Application Priority

XBOX: Highest, post 3074 (same port as on the Range Port Forward page)

    http/https: high, port 80,443

    pop3: medium, port 110

    smtp: medium, port 25

    uTorrent: low, port 45382

    ** Wireless QoS

    Disabled
