    Hey Guys

If you have a non-HDMI capable TV, what's the best way for hooking up a PS3? I don't have a console here so I don't know what's inclued or what's possible.

Would this be the correct order in terms of resolution?

    D4
    Composite with Y Pb Cr
    D3

I'm asking because a friend wants to get a used TV here in Japan (can't afford HDMI) and most models have one or the other, but not all. How do the composite cable set-ups compare with the D-cables? I thought the YPbCr inputs were 1080. Is that true?

    Thanks!

The D terminal is basically component video in a nice connector (although it does have Data support) but the number after the D will tell you the highest resolution your TV will support.

The D series goes like this..

    D1 - 480i (Standard TV resolution)
    D2 - 480p
    D3 - 1080i
    D4 - 720P
    D5 - 1080p

So look at the back of the TV and look for a D Terminal support and a number and that will tell you the maximum resolution it will do, sometime you may see two terminals and one of them might only support D1 (or standard resolution), generally trust the D terminal number rather then anything advertised if the D terminal has no number then assume it only supports D1 video (or take model number down and look it up on the interweb...).

A wide screen TV should do 720p or 1080i but again you can't assume it will.

Composite with Y Pb and Cr? I assume you mean Component with YPbPr? If so then the resolution will depend on the TV, most Japanese TVs have a D terminal so if the D terminal is say D2 then 480p will be the highest resolution you will get regardless. If no D terminal then you will have to go on what is advertised (or take model number and look it up), do not assume if a TV has component video sockets that it will support progressive video as you may find it will only do standard (480i) resolution.

Thanks, yeah I did mean component YPbPr. How does that rank on the D list? If I have a choice of the component output on one TV or a different TV with D2, which would be better for a PS3?

Well the one with D2 does support 480p (which is what my TV supports and the picture quality is good) as for Component, well you would really need to ask or find out as there is no way to know if it will support 480p, it will support 480i but that's not much use. If the price is the same then go for the one with the D2 port.

please keep in mind that all D-terminal connections are analogue, as inferred from YPrPb. I d advise for HDMI, with sets that follow the latest guidlines of HDMI.

HDMI sets are still expensive, but as the D terminal has been around in Japan for quite a number of years and although Analogue it still gives a great picture, it's quite easy to buy a low cost second hand TV that supports 480p (D2), bought mine for about 30 quid.

oh yeah, don't get me wrong. For me analogue and HDMI have no noticable differences at the same resolutions.

OK so then without HDMI the D-4 is the next available option, then down to D3.

Personally, I'd set it up like this:

If you wanna make one of these, the toilet is available here.

Just a shame that's not the bit you piss in......

Just be aware of this: The PS3 is a pain in the ass to set up once you choose a cable connection. For some stupid reason, it won't automatically switch if you choose to use a different cable connection (For example: Say you want to switch from Component to Composite because you want to take it over to your friends house. You have to choose the connection and then quickly switch over).
