Hello all, I have Half Life for my Dreamcast. I have tried playing it, but for me the controls are back to front. I am used to left toggle move forward/backward and strafe. Right toggle for look and buttons for jump etc.

Is there anyway or alternative for a controller? I have seen the PS2 to Dreamcast converter, but I believe you can't have both toggle and buttons work at the same time?

I have contemplated modifying a dreamcast controller and moving the directional pad to the right hand side.

I am not really keen to learn the controls as they are as I think it will stuff me up with other games.

Personally I load up steam and launch it from there.

Dreamcast mouse and keyboard are the only way to play it :p, DC controller while wonderful, sucks for half life pretty badly

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason the game was canned was because the beta testers went on strike after being forced to play using only the Dreamcast controller.

Hah, then you should compare Quake 3 DC with Quake 3 PS2: a gazillion of controller settings on PS2 version, bar the DC one (which is perfect IMHO).

Imho, its no different using the dc controller over N64 controller on Goldeneye 007.

Ideally, the perfect way would be with official mouse and kb.

I had never played Half-Life on PC so my first experience was on the Dreamcast using the Pad.

I played it when it first became 'available' to everyone and thoroughly enjoyed it, though the keyboard and mouse seems to be most peoples preferred method I found I had no problems using a controller.

I guess it depends how much you want to play the game on the DC? for me it was going to be the only way I would play it and having never been a PC gamer the mouse/keyboard combo always feels alien.

Just suck it and see you can always try each option then decide. (i already had a keyboard/mouse so no extra cost for me there)

either way enjoy it. Some advice though as I played the earlier un-optimised version I believe:

obviously everyone knows the loading times are long so be prepared to hear the DC doing the disc dance sound! The VMU is pretty full from just one save and I had a save game corrupt and had to start again so maybe use two VMU's for saving (if possible) and my version did crash a few times so saves are important

Hey guys, thanks for the replies! I tried a modified Dreamcast controller, where I added another "D" pad to the left side of the controller. The controller worked, but the controls still sucked lol.

I am lead to believe that the Dreamcast gun controllers are different between PAL and NTSC, is this the same for the keyboard/mouse?

    Thanks again Pete

    AFAIK, all hardware is compatible.

Check this list though, as it states that the US didn't get a SEGA gun.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast_light_guns

The mouse can act as a gun though (ie for Confidential Mission) and there's this one Chinese brand (prolly in that list) which emulates the mouse, and could thus be used for Silent Scope.
