Want to play some Sin & Punishment on my N64, waiting for the cartridge in the mail. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks!
Note: I guess the question is more so, how do you play Japanese N64 games on a USA N64? Thanks again!
Thanks. However, I was hoping to avoid that. Would it be possible to use a GameShark or by plugging it into the top of the NEO N64 Myth Cart or Dr. V64 cartridge connector?
I don't at all regret hacking away at the dust cover took awhile and it needs some smoothing but it did the job, and I now have no issue at all playing Sin and Punishment and Mario Kart 64
You could also just take the plastic the tab tray out. Not the "Best way" to do it but does the job. You could also switch out the backs with a crappy sports game.
switching out the backs would be the best and cheapest way in case you don't want to modify your console.
Just set aside the plastic piece, to insert later once done with Japanese games for an extended time.
THIS. Use any cheap US Sports game back. The notches inside should be left alone, they help in the alignment when inserting a cart.
^That's a pretty decent idea, though it sounds quite time consuming. To be honest the best thing to do is just cut out the tabs on the cart slot, it takes a bit of work but N64's are so cheap and common you're not really cutting into anything special. I have a US machine with the tabs cut and I can just plug in and play my US and Japanese games with few issues.
Only if your looking to play pal games on an Ntsc n64. The n64 cartridge slot doesn't allow for much play and having done this mod over 10 years I can say without a doubt that I have never had an alignment problem.
Yeah I don't see why it would be a problem for anyone to cut out the plastic tabs. It's not like it's taking anything away from it cosmetically, you can't even see that it's been done unless you go out of your way to look. If you were planning on getting a bunch of Japan only games it would probably save you a lot more time then it would to individually place new backs on each cart from crappy cheap games.
OP wants to avoid cutting the tabs. Perhaps the machine in question is of personal (or otherwise) value. If the cart block insert thing can be removed, I'd say do that. Personally, I wouldn't ever modify *our* (bro's and my) first N64, and thus I sourced a secondary machine just for modifying (ended up putting a green LED in it, too, to keep them separate. :encouragement
