Was this ever found/dumped? I remember reading somewhere that S&K originally added knuckles to Sonic 1 as well but this feature was taken out due to crash bugs and replaced with the special stages option instead. Anyone have any information?
Not really the same, but it seems someone hacked Sonic 1 to include Knuckles. The news and download link is about half way down the page at http://www.sws2b.com/ Sweet.
I don't believe that it was due to bugs, I believe it was merely due to cost. You see, the S&K cart has an extra 256K ROM that the game code only enables when the connected cart has the same product ID as Sonic 2. In order to support Sonic 1, they'd have had to have either two such chips, or a larger ROM to hold the code for Sonic 1, and then you also have to take into account that Sonic 1 is only 512K while Sonic 2 is 1MB. I just don't think it was feasible to implement Sonic 1 support. And yes, the KiS1 hack is sweet, especially on a real Genesis =P
