The wife and I went to Tokyo for 2 weeks back in November and muchly enjoyed it. On one of the days we took the train out to Kamakura for a day of sight seeing and one of the first places we went to was a temple it has a small cave you can walk through and a temple up the side of a mountain with a cafe which looks out over the coast (sorry in my ignorance I can't remember the name). Anyway, there where birds of prey flying around the area, but we couldn't find out what type. We think they may have been Sea Eagles but does anyone know for sure?
Could be the Japanese mutant crows  Those things are massive and make the British ones look like Robbins or something. Actually, come to think of it, they're probably ravens although the Japanese call them crows. They also call doves white pigeon Guess they're right on that one though.
I've seen kites (the bird kind...) in Kamakura and in other semi mountainous regions like Gunma and Tochigi, so it may have been one of them? I've also seen a Falcon in Ibaraki too...
It's called a "tobi". There was a special on them recently, but I don't think it was kamakura. Those mother fuckers will swoop in and steal food from people, where as Japan's national bird (the genetically mutated crow) will sneak up and steal food. Wikipedia
I don't know if they're eagles or hawks but I was surprised to see them in Hiroshima too. They would follow the river from the sea into the city and just soar the sky and stay away from people. Unusual for me at the beginning I would always look up when I heard their shrill cry.
Mutant crows is an understatment. The crows in Tokyo alone are big enough to carry away animals and small children! -hl718
A few days after first reading this thread, I ventured out to Yokosuka / Yokohama yesterday and saw this bird. My Japanese is no where near fluent at this time, so when I said 'There's a tobi' to my friend who's Japanese, she freaked out, haha...
