Notes : All dates for the Japanese release unless otherwised stated. (Japan) normally means this console was not released first in Japan. h: All dates correct as far as I can check them but I might have made a balls up somewhere. Not all releases shown, as I can't be arsed with finding all the PAL release dates and can't be arsed with most the American ones either. OH: You might notice a lack of Atari dates, this is because most of their consoles in most books, websites and flyers only have the month down as release. Sega for some reason can't remember when they released half their early consoles / computers, I have it on good authority that the SG-1000 was release the same day as the Nintendo Famicom and I can see why Sega would keep quiet about that... Highlighted all the anniversaries in bold and underlined any really important ones. If anyone has any more to add or corrections then post them and I'll update this list. h: I envy you... all I get for my birthdays are itunes and amazon gift certificates (not very useful for buying retro game systems >_<)
Awww, Super Famicom... becoming so old. & Even with no publicity or releases, you are still beating everyone to the ground.
February 21st - Nintendo Famicom Disc System - 23rd Birthday It's also 23rd bithday of The Legend Of Zelda series on that date. Really huge title for a new system release
Thank you jamtex for making us feel older than we areOH::-( J/k, nice list, maybe we should make it automatic (like user's birthdays) so we all get an email during those dates. After all this forum is all about old consoles, where else should we do this if not here?
Hehe, well it makes me feel old as the PC Engine CD-ROM unit and Megadrive will be 20 this year and it doesn't seem like yesterday that the SNK Neo Geo Pocket (monochrome) decided to be born a week after the Game Boy Color and then release the Neo Geo Pocket Color nearly 2 weeks after the reasonable successful launch of the Bandai Wonderswan. I do have a database of a lot of Consoles and Games release dates (for research purposes honestly....) and I will put it to good use later this year. I should be in Japan on the 20th birthday of the Megadrive so I hope there is something to celebrate it. Hopefully that won't get some geeky looking europeans arrested for defacing public property. Apart from the Atari consoles just coming out in a month, the only other consoles I can't get a exact date of release is the Nintendo 64DD as it seems there are multiple dates depending on who you believe and Nintendo seemed to have brushed this under the table in terms of it ever existing... If there is interest I will add the Major European release dates in as well as the rest of the US dates.
Yes, I knew someone was going to rant about me not putting up the 64DD but given that I can find dates of the 1st, 9th, 14th, 15th (and probably others if I looked) of the release of the N64 it's hard to give it an exact birthday. Hoping a quick email to Nintendo Japan might give me an answer.
what about making a special post for each significant birthday? something like a review, pics, some story and best games/ best unreleased/ games for the system?
Excellent! We should press for a World Wide recognised annual 'Fallen Consoles day' where we honor those who have given us enjoyment and saved us from the tedium of rainy days everywhere! Anyone want to select a particular day in question, for example the day Sega pulled out of gaming hardware altogether or perhaps when Atari folded? Loving this post!
