So I thought I'd share some gaming news with you guys, since I haven't seen anything posted about it yet. Black Mesa now has a release date: September 14. For those of you who are not familiar with Black Mesa, it's a remake/reimagining of the original Half Life using the Source engine. It's been in development since 2004, and it originally had a planned release date in 2009, which did not come to fruition. The team had very ambitious goals - they basically wanted to create something equivalent to what Valve has done in more recent games. That's a pretty huge burden to bear, but it looks very promising, to say the least. They've released the game's soundtrack, which can be downloaded for free (or you can pay them) on their website, and there's also a countdown to the release. The announcement says the first release will include everything up to Xen, and they'll release Xen in the near future. I've been following this for quite a while, and it looks like it's going to be pretty awesome. If you're a Half Life fan, you should be excited. I should also mention that it's free, and PC-only at the moment. Black Mesa site: http://www.blackmesasource.com/ Announcement: http://forums.blackmesasource.com/showthread.php?p=480683#post480683
Hmm Valve released a version of Half Life Source in the Orange box anyway. I completed it again last year. I think if Black Mesa project included the HL1 expansions which didn't get sourced such as Blue Shift, then I'd be happy to have a look. Otherwise I got too many games to play and not enough time to play them in
I am very excited about this. I actually played Halflife through on the Dreamcast as I never had a good enough PC to play it on that format. I am on the hunt for a half decent PC at the moment so when that happens I will snap this up/download it because it looks brilliant.
I remember reading about this when it first started development, but then just like the rest of the world I forgot about it after it took forever to make. Will give a try, should be a million times better than HL Source, which honestly is pretty crap.
yeah if they done or incorporated opposing force and blue shift it would be pretty awesome but thats asking a lot.
Half-Life Source was just a straight port to the engine, Black Mesa has actually revamped all the graphics etc to bring it inline with more modern graphics
I think HL:S looked miles better than HL even if it was a straight port. I just wish I could see the expansion with equal or better quality as they kind of look like ass.
Half-Life Source is a load of half-assed garbage that would be acceptable if it was given free on Steam to everyone who bought HL2, but the fact that they're charging money for it is embarrassing.
Yeah, as others have said, Black Mesa is a different thing altogether from Half Life: Source. HL:S is just a port with some minor enhancements. Black Mesa is an entirely new game, built from the ground up. Everything is new: character models, textures, maps, voice samples, music, etc. Of course the plot is basically the same, and it's "based" on Half Life, but everything has been remade and/or expanded.
Wow that's awesome that we're finally seeing a release. Thought this project would never be completed
All these years and still not finished. This is just a little bit too late for it to make the big splash it would've a few years ago imo. It looked amazing 7 years ago. Now it just looks "good" But who knows, maybe what is actually in the package is significantly different/better looking than the samples they've had up on the site for years now. I'm still going to download it and play it either way!
Someone leaked a video of the game recently: http://youtu.be/g-wfdgpCRXc I think this version is pretty close to final.
I've been looking forward to this for a long time. I remember when the 2009 release date came and went. When 2011 rolled around I kind of gave up on this actually coming out.
Assuming this is released in 9 days, I will give them kudos simply for getting such a huge fan project out the door... 3 years late or not, how many times have we seen these things die long before the halfway mark?
Just thought I'd mention that Black Mesa is on the Steam Greenlight program now, so if you want to see it on Steam, go and vote for it. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=94128543
