Here's the obligatory, "sorry if this has been posted before." I've noticed that a lot games I would call my favorite seem to be the black sheep of their respective series. Examples would be Final Fantasy VIII, DOOM3, GTA IV, Metal Gear Solid 2, etc. Wasn't sure if there are other users out there who cling to the more polarizing releases. Might as well turn this into a list! Castlevania II: Simon's Quest - Castlevania Contra: Legacy of War - Contra Counter Strike: Condition Zero - Counter Strike Devil May Cry 2 - Devil May Cry Dino Crisis 2 - Dino Crisis DOOM3 - DOOM Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - Final Fantasy Final Fantasy VIII - Final Fantasy Final Fantasy XIII - Final Fantasy Forza 5 - Forza Motorsport Grand Theft Auto IV - Grand Theft Auto Gran Tursimo 5 - Gran Tursimo Halo 4 - Halo Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (I need scissors! 61!) - Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Ac!d - Metal Gear Solid Metroid Other M - Metroid Resident Evil 0 - Resident Evil Ridge Racer V - Ridge Racer Shadow the Hedgehog - Sonic the Hedgehog Silent Hill 4: The Room - Silent Hill Sonic 3D Blast (Replaced Sonic Adventure) - Sonic the Hedgehog Starfox Adventures - Starfox Tecmo Super Bowl 2 - Tecmo Super Bowl ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth - ToeJam & Earl Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Wind Waker - The Legend of Zelda Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - The Legend of Zelda
I've actually never played that one. Then again, I've significantly under appreciated the Metroid games. Why is it so polarizing?
I always found it strange , the hate FFVlll received, By far my favorite FF , I guess other games I enjoyed that where not overly popular... DinoCrisis 2, Resident Evil 0 , SMB2 ( lol) I have a lot of older DOS games I play, that I would imaging no one else would bother with ..
It was very different to the point people hated it, and hated Samus in it too. I don't know, it wasn't that bad.
I mean, I kinda get it. It came right after VII, which was absolutely huge. It implemented the junction system, which was way more complicated than the Materia system. The story was really ambitious in terms of the scope of what all it was trying to deliver. Squall was brooding and "emo," the art style was realistic, the characters were all teenagers, etc. It was a tough pill to swallow for those wanting FF VII: Part 2. Doki Doki Panic for the win! There aren't any other Metroid games as polarizing, are there? At least it wasn't on the level of Zelda II.
Halo 4. The multiplayer was good, but the story was shit. Way to ruin the two main characters within the first 5 minutes of the game guys.
I absolutely love GTA IV. Perhaps it was just too different, but when you play through it, you start to appreciate it. With Forza 5 there were many problems, the main would be that a lot of the best cars were DLC only. For a launch title, it was impressive. The visuals, the physics, the gameplay were all nice. It was just what I expected from a launch title, it was missing a lot of features from the previous games. I hope that Forza 6 will be at least the same quality as the superb Forza 4.
I've always really liked Zelda II. It was actually my favorite of the two Zelda games until LTTP came out and I rented it. Also, I only had Castlevania II as a kid and rather enjoy that game still. Kick ass music in it as well. I tend to think of it as a great concept with a flawed execution. It has all the pieces to make an excellent game, they just didn't slap em together right.
Well said, I agree on every point. interestingly I also really enjoyed FFlX , which some people considered a bit of a black sheep too. it was pretty contrasting to "Emo" FFXlll haha
I have yet to talk to somebody who considers GTA IV their favorite. A lot of people were turned off by the fact that a lot of the customization was gone. No more buildable attributes, no more customizable cars, etc. You couldn't buy businesses and the environment was considered drab. Also people found the game too serious and a bit boring. Before V, the majority of people were all over Vice City and San Andreas. Now that V bettered IV in almost every sense, the poor game is now just an artifact of the time.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is on my favorites list. Other than being extremely easy it was still a nice relaxing RPG.
MGS2 and FFVIII are probably my favorite entries in both of those series, I can understand why people are turned off by those games and their gripes though
I haven't seen Sonic Adventure considered the black sheep, now Sonic Heroes, nobody seemed to like that, but I thought it was a pretty good platformer that mixed it up just enough. Super Smash Bros Brawl is still fun, even if the competitive players bemoan it not being Melee (same goes for the Wii U one too)
The only one I can think of is Yoshi's Island. A lot of people criticized it because it wasn't a true sequel to Yoshi's Island (which it really wasn't), because it was too short, and because it was too easy. I think those are valid criticisms, but I still love that game anyway. It's probably one of my favorite games on the system. I actually like the fact that it's kind of short, because that makes it easy to pick up and do a playthrough whenever you feel like it. I really like the graphics style and the music. I guess a lot of people also thought it was too cute, but I like the cuteness. Not sure if this counts, but I also really like Wind Waker. It's probably my favorite Zelda game. Some people say that they don't like it because of the cartoony art style. Personally, I really like the art style, and I think it fits the game very well. It seems like most people either don't like it for that reason, or they really like it. I think the kind of people who wouldn't play Wind Waker because of its art style are the kind of people who dislike cartoons or animation of any kind. Sucks to be them.
I guess that was a selfish choice. Sonic Adventure is still one of my favorite games mainly due to intense nostalgia. Every mainline Sonic title before it besides 3D Blast was considered solid. Technically it was the first actual 3D Sonic game and it came out when Sonic still had gaming relevance. While most gaming critics gave it positive reviews at the time, it's not well regarded currently. The more I think about it, Sonic 3D Blast should be added to that list.
Starfox Adventures. People seem to hate it because Dinosaur Planet looked so awesome, and the odd use of a Starfox IP. I love it because it was based on the Zelda N64 game engine so it's easy to get into, the characters are fun and likeable, and the graphics are awesome for a game of its time. Not to mention it was the swan song for Rare on Nintendo. Edit: and now that you mention it, I really like Sonic 3D Blast on the Saturn. Great music, has my favourite Sonic bonus game, and it's not actually that bad to play, although an analogue controller is highly recommended.
I actually really like Sonic Adventure. It's just SA2 and pretty much every subsequent 3D Sonic game that I don't like.
I can also mention Counter-strike: Condition Zero. It's quite an obscure game now, because nobody seems to talk about it. I liked it only because of the Single player story mode. It was actually good and I enjoyed it very much.
