Here's a little playthrough I did of Blazing Star. I tried to make it a good run, although I'm no expert at the game. This is running on my MVS, connected to my Sony PVM. It's best viewed at 720p. Enjoy!
That's so you can see the fantastic image quality on his PVM. I'd love one of them but it would have to be a 24" screen for me and one being that big would need to be on sale localy since shipping would be about 5000 yen even within Japan.
The last 2 retrocades I filmed on a CRT, you can make the pixels out if you look close enough, but my Camera isn't as good so you can see black Bars. But yeah, I love exactly the same thing a nice PVM for my old school games and an MVS.... someday... Some day
24" would be nice, but 20" is fine for my purposes. I think 20" is a good size because the bigger the screen gets, the bigger the pixels get, and the less sharp it looks. This is especially noticeable on 240p material, which is the majority of what I use my PVM for. 20" is plenty big if you're not too far away from it. Much smaller than that and you have to be right next to it to get a good view. Bigger CRTs (especially PVMs) are also extremely heavy. My PVM is like 66 lbs (30 kg), so a 24" could easily weigh 100 lbs.
No way. All arcade screens in Japan such as those in Astro City or Blast City cabs are about 24" or 26" I think. They are pretty big. Actually, I had an arcade screen here in my home from a set of stuff someone bought. The screen had no casing so it would have been dangerous to have on with my son about plus it had screen burn. Still, looked lovely when powered up. I ended up taking it to the local dump. That was only 20" and yeah, it must have been about 30kg.
I think Astro City(s) are 27", actually. Arcade screens vary in size, but I think Yakumo is correct in saying that most of them are 24" or larger. However, I've seen some 13"-14" ones, such as a Final Fight cab I saw recently.
Astros, Blasts, Naomis etc.. are all 29" monitors, although you might only have 28" viewable. As for Blazing Star, I reckon it's the best Neo Geo shmup, and it's one of my all time favourites. I find the Windina is the easiest/best ship for scoring. When the enemies hit your charge shot explosion then the score multiplyer goes up. If you start to memorise the levels and unleash the charge in the correct place your score goes through the roof.
ah, 29inch. In this day of 16:9 flat screen TVs it's hard to remember the good old 4:3 screen sizes. I know I had a 28" Toshiba back in the UK 15 or so years ago. Man, that seriously kicked arse with 2 RGB inputs (21 pin) and 1 RGB out. It was Dolby surround too! I've always said Toshiba screens are fantastic if you buy the higher end models. A very under rated company when it comes to screens, modern or old.
I wouldn't know, since it's the only Neo Geo shmup I've played, and the only one I own. It's a great game, though. The first few levels are ridiculously easy, but they get insanely hard after that. Good thing I have free-play.
I wish official Neo geo Games were still being made, Because lets be honest... NG Dev kind of sucks plus I think more could have been squeezed out of it AND... I'd love to see what Cave could have done on the Neo Geo.
