I have a couple of Magpies who live in the next door garden. The old man passed away a while ago and his huge garden has turned to a sprawling haven for all sorts of wildlife.

However, around the corner the workmen have been digging up the road, waking me up really early as they have been laying new cables (I think).

This morning they were gone! Peace after a weeks solid digging! Great!

However, the sodding magpies have taken to copying the sound of the bloody pneumatic drills! Morning, noon and early evening I am now hearing them calling out to one another as fake drills! Bloody magpies, that's it for months now! :noooo:

I'm very supersticious regarding Magpies, I also hold them in great esteem, they truly are king of birds. You watch a pair, or more of Magpie's holding court against 'lesser' birds, they certainly show 'em who's boss!

...We also have a couple of regular visitors to our garden, they will eat you out of house and home, but truly worth it.

    Enjoy.

I shall try! Hard to get them to cooperate. I see them all the time, they have a tendency to 'buzz' my cats!

We don't have them here, but we have Ravens, which I believe they are related to magpies. They are smart birds.

They are both from the crow family. Magpies are indeed smart.

They have a reputation for stealing shiny things, but that runs in the crow family, really. There are lots of myths about the magpie, basically stemming back to the idea that it was an evil bird. The nursery rhyme (of which there are several variants once again) suggests that seeing one is bad luck - and of course, you almost always see a solitary magpie!

Whilst crows and rooks aren't much liked in England, they don't have such a bad reputation. That said, ravens are said to predict death and bring bad luck, and are believed to forecast the weather!

Not as yet. I haven't heard many birds in our back garden since it started snowing. They've either shut up or moved somewhere else to be sure of food.
